...just got a letter in the mail yesterday stating Wawanesa will no longer be insuring my 2 RHD Land Cruisers as of April 8 2009... my take on it is I can see them saying that starting April 8 2009 you can no longer add another RHD vehicle, but those that are already are insured will still be covered. I could deal with that. Even if they bumped up the deductible, whatever... I've been with the same insurance company for 16 years and have an almost perfect driving record. This letter not only came as a shock to me, but pisses me off as well. :o Anyways, now what can a guy like me do, right?

So my question: Who do all the RHD owners in Calgary deal with for insurance? And what is there take on the RHD situation? Are you paying an arm & a leg? Right now I'm paying $138.00 per month for 2 Cruisers... and wondering how much that will change?

PS - not sure if I posted this in the right forum...

thanks

try Almagamated in Ardrie and tell Christian that Wayne from Luxury Imports sent you...

I havent had any issues insuring my 74, but then I'm in BC :flipoff2:

My wife just insured her Rav4 last week and they asked her if it was right or left hand drive. thats the first I've heard of them asking that question so some changes must be coming to the insurance industry. Lets hope that we will still be able to import and drive these right hand drive vehicles.

HOPE??
you better do much better than that...

get off your asses and join the sig below...

... thanks Wayne, I always appreciate your input. Hopefully I can report back with good news... looks like its time for me to join the fight as well!

The other thing to do is find out which government agency in Alberta handed off insurance to the private sector. If your truck is DOT legal there is a responsibility for the province to allow you to drive it legally IE make sure you can insure it.
Where this whole PPP(public private partnership) free market capitalism bull**** breaks down is in a situation like this where a private firm doesn't want to be bothered with it, but my bet is being granted the legal status of an auto insurance company also gives a legal obligation to provide service. On the extreme end if they ARE allowed to deny service to someone then at the very least the government has an obligation to make sure you can get insurance one way or the other...

Just a quick Google sends me to:

Alberta insurance legislation:
Alberta Queen's Printer

The government body that appears to be the insurance industries regulator in AB:
Alberta Finance and Enterprise - Insurance - Index
Said bodies complaint officer:
Alberta Finance and Enterprise - Insurance - Consumer Information

Some qauzi governmental board that probably has people sitting around scratching there ass all day who could give you an idea on what to do:
Alberta Automobile Insurance Rate Board - Home Page - Alberta, Canada

That's the one nice thing about living with the old socialist system here in BC, ICBC has no legal ability to deny RHD trucks EVER, the only way they could deny insurance is if TC (Transport Canada) said they couldn't be driven...
Now premiums may well be another story, but we shall have to see what happens on that one....

good luck and let us know what happens!

Thanks for the responses boys, I'm gonna get right into this over the next week or so and I'll definately post the results.

RHDs are here. You can purchase them legally. You can sell them legally. You can register them.

I do know it is illegal for a company to deny you insurance - regardless of gender, race or age ( for the most part )...
Now wether I drive a 4Runner or a LandCruiser, thats my decision... we pay for insurance so we are taken care of. This is discrimination according to what you drive? Stupid... if the govnt lets them in they need to be fully insured. If they want to put a ban on JDM starting now then so be it, we still need to be able to insure what we have.

The issue is that if I have my 1990 HDJ81 valued at $14000 and it gets in an accident, they look at the value of a '90 Toyota ( 4Runner ) and give it a value of $2000. Okay...

They are too ignorrant to look into what our vehicles are worth - couldnt be bothered. But then again what is worth 15G to me might only be worth 10 to you...

... whats going to happen to us Cruiser heads? Have all the young guys with Skylines and cracked bumpers from driving like idiots ruined it for us all?

Natty

I insure my BJ74 with Meloche Monnex (through TD insurance) for just under $600 a year for full coverage. I have had 2 major accidents in the past 3 years, both of them not my fault. The first accident was over 10K in damage and the second accident was a write off. I hope I don't get one of those letters.

Joe,
you have MADE money off your trucks... you have a serious horseshoe up your butt, my friend.

MM treated me well for 2 decades and paid out a $250K accident with out question and gave me a gas guzzler rental while my little truck was repaired.

also, want full coverage in case of accident then get the unit appraised and send a copy to your insurance company for record... of course your rates might go up...

Just spoke to Amalgamated in Airdrie ( thanks Wayne ) and they are having problems with them as well. Looks like a deductible of $5000 or more for your average driver, and possibly as low as $2500  for a driver with a "perfect" record. An inspection and appraisal is a must. Also, Nissans of any kind will not be covered at all. Should us TOYOTA freaks feel lucky?

Everyone without a problem right now, lay low... I sincerely hope you dont get the "letter in the mail"... looks like the day we all were wondering about is here! :censor:

Looks like guys doing appraisals are gonna be making a killing or the next while!

well, i hate to say "told yah so" but i warned everyone back when the BS report by ICBC came out... we didn't have the support we needed and now ICBC and their ban on RHDs will probably take place, not from TC but from within the insurance companies themselves. we can still win this if we get the support we need but time is FAST running out.
oh well, i guess we will end up with great drivetrains for rusty trucks or FJ40 swaps...

Wayne, what exactly is it that we can do? Join IVOAC and donate money? We all have 2 spend it on inspections and insurance! I will be the first to admit all this stuff was on the back of my mind until it happened to me personally. But seriously... what can or should we be doing?

the biggest problem was lack of funding for a analist to review ICBCs report and prove it fraudulant. we HAVE to battle this report and prove it inaccurate or they win by default...

we need someone to take this by the horns but most people that buy imports are middleclass individuals that can not afford to invest the money needed. we have over 1000 members, if each donated $1000 towards this battle then we could have the funding needed to launch a proper investigation

but

sad to say, it isn't happening...

in the last 2 years we aquired a whole $3000 in donations... what a joke!! it just shows how important owning a RHD is to some people...

Joe, I'm suprised TC Melloche Monnex insured you. They wouldn't insure my FJ40 because it was "modified". I have my house and at the time 2 other vehicles through them. I ended up using TD insurance, something like $57 a month, fully loaded.

Wayne, the question I have are the Alberta insurance companies using ICBC's questionable report to affect their coverage or rates?

I understand the rates for the guys in BC are going up as a result of the ICBC report, but what's driving the Alberta rates, loss of coverage etc?

Craig.

this report has been on TC site for a year now and yes, i have spoken with a number of insurance companies in my research and the report by ICBC has been accredited as the main reason for the increase or complete refusal to insure the RHD units.

I think you may have misunderstood. I use TD insurance as well. TD is Melloche Monnex.
