So I bought a 1965 FJ 40 but my problem is it i can't drive it further then 15 minutes without it getting ridiculously hot inside the cabin. I think the headers run pretty hot and there's two black hoses that run through a little box in the front of the cabin. A lot of heat gets flown through this box, and it's placed just a few inches from the driver side area.

My question is how do you guys direct the heat from your headers? Or better yet, what am i supposed to tell the cruiser mechanic in my area that i need to get done to the machine so the heat dissipates correctly :/

Sorry for having such newbiish vocab but not sure of all the terms and what not.

You can see the little box in this photo, it has the yellow sticker on it.. In the center of the console

Thanks

Heater hose back of the engine coming out of the head. Does it have a little valve on it? If so cut it off in the summer.

I have seen some people use shields, header wrap or having the headers coated.

I wish I could check. I tried to pop the hood open but can't seem to lift it up. I unhooked the two hinges and push up on the hood but the hood doesn't seem to disengage :/

I'm not falling for this one.

You had no problem getting it open in this pic?

Got it open. Used a hammer to push the black wire mesh and then lifted the hood up. woot
So now i look for a valve hmmm

Wow those heater hoses are still quite hot. Why do people even put the device in the cabin ? Wouldn't it be smarter to have the heat dissipate away from you instead of inside the cabin

I and several others have inserted a ball-cock valve into one of the heater lines in the cab. The one on the head is a pain to get at and this method works quite well.

I spoke with a friend he told me you don't even need the heater hoses? hmm, says it's just directed to provide heating. Suggested that they be removed and get some plug thing.. Then wrap the headers with some special insulating material and also told me about something you can buy to put on the walls so the heat doesn't get in the cabin.

But apparently, my vehicle isn't turning over. fantastic. Friend thinks it may be the starter getting to hot or just having a faulty starter :/

Its called dynamat it works like dream. I bought mine though JEGS, not only does it keep you ride cooler but it helps eliminate road noise it's a little pricey but it will pay for it self the first hot Texas summer day. I would also buy a starter heat shield from JEGS they run about 30 bucks and will let your starter live a couple more years. Hope this helps

Thanks will do. The motor has cooled but the dam thing won't crank :/
I suppose the starter has fried or it's the solenoid

Could be, take it out and have the local auto part store test it before you buy another. Question are a member of Lone Star Land Cruisers?

Hi All:

I've heard in the past that a one inch body lift allows for more air flow underneath the rig, really helping dispate heat from the header pipes.

Good luck!

Alan

Never really thought about that, but it seems like you would get a little better air flow. Good Point

Not yet, but I am going to register with the TLCA later this week.

I'm Confused.

ARE YOU SURE THE HEATER ISN'T ON?

I'm with this guy... in the original post you were asking what the box is with the autometer sticker on it... thats the Heater!!!! I bet your heater is on and thats why it's getting hot in there! you don't have to cut anything or block anything.. just turn the damn thing off!

:D

PS buy a haynes manual or something .. it will tell you what everything does...

did you find the hood latch underneath the bezel - it is underneath the top right hand corner...

I plugged up the heater hose outlets but can't test it out cause it's not starting. Went ahead and swapped the battery still no good. When i turn the ignition on the volt thing goes up real slowly, if i turn the light switch on the volt meter bounces back and forth. If i turn the signals on they turn on real slow and dim. hmm
After playing around with it, i don't even think the signal lights are coming on

Any of yall know what the problem could be.

K. it looks like the oldest year they have is the 1968, can't be much different then the 1965?

My heater switch is located right next to my vent, and marked with a (H) switch if your heater was on you would know, the blowers sounds like a helicopter. Hope you get it back on the road. Post some pics
