Injection system problems, I think

Let me back Conex up, since he lives just down the street.... the mechanics in the area have a real problem with not wanting to fess up to inability or to screw ups.

It is discouraging as it isn't until after work is done that you find out that the guy doing it knows maybe less than you do.

My new approach is that I pay the mechanic to help me do most of my own work at his shop. Works pretty well in that at least I know darn for sure what is and isn't done, and when I see shortcuts starting to crop up, I can redirect. It isn't a very effective use of time, but I don't have a garage at home right now anyway.... so it works out.

Word to the wise: anyone out there who has serious mechanic skills and would like to move somewhere to escape winter.... I'm sure that we could get you setup in a shop of your own nearby. Expect major, major headaches with getting parts/supplies/new tools... but you'll have a steady stream of happy customers willing to pay you a lot more than what they pay now (though less, probably, than a mechanic earns in the states)

prices are a good point ( off topic ) but how much I pay for mount and unmount my PS pump ofr example .. ? 20 bucks .. how I much pay for a PS pump rebuild ? 50 bucks.

Here are someones that really know what are doing and other that not .. ! but dosen't make sence, both charge the same !

I hear where your coming from. I`ve seen some really crappy work done by idiots down hear that call themselves mechanics. Some of the stuff verges on criminal. Just because you can turn a wrench and cut some wires doesn`t make you a mechanic...

But it doesn`t prevent people down here screwwing people over s*** they have no idea on how to fix. Most of these idiots have no clue how stuff works they just change parts till the problem goes away. And even then they don`t even do a proper job at it. The main problem is that people down here want a cheap fix so they end up with idiots that can barely do a proper oil change. Thats how they stay in business.

I say, you get what you pay for. Which is why i ended up setting up my own garage and have a full time Real MECHANIC. that knows his stuff and I can supervise. Then again my family has a small fleet of vehicles, so it ends up being cost effective for us. And We don`t end up fixing crap other people F:censor: up cause we don`t let other idiots touch our vehicles.

Sorry for the rant, but it really Pisses me off when there is no recourse other than beating the crap outa a guy that F:censor: up you car. and then gives you some lame excuse how it wasn`t his fault or it was already like that.

Anyway, good luck with your brothers LC and hopfully it isn`t anything too bad.

Cheers,

I really like the fact that when I trace wires, they all turn into clear speaker wire at some point with at least 5 splices (not butt splices, but twisted wire and some have masking tape protecting them). The wiring at my tail lights is ALL green wires. Thank you PO, wherever you are.

I finally just GAVE UP on fixing wiring on my old 40

spent a couple of weeks and used up a few dozen yards of wire and rebuilt the wiring loom from scratch. Serious pain in the butt, but it works much better now.

Of course, I promptly sold the darn thing right after I finished the project :*(

But yes, electrical "repairs" here are the most exciting!

 It seems we´ve all bought a used car that has the exact same electrical mods done to it...

Don´t blame the PO, He brobably just took it to his local Mechanic for a tune up or install speakers.:smokin:

In a friend's BJ42 that I worked on, that got swamped in a river a few years ago, the diaphragm in the injector pump was damaged by the water ingress and needed to be replaced. It could explain the knock, the white smoke and a few other issues related to fueling issues.

anyone know how to say "injector pump diaphragm" in Spanish?

My brother would fit in perfectly as a mechanic here as he is extremely SLOOOOOW in fixing anything. I drained the pump again on Thursday and it was full of water. I had to leave to catch a plane to Panama and he said he was going to reset the valves, do a compression check and if that turned out ok he was gonna pull the pump. That should only take him about 3 weeks:rolleyes:.

While driving to San Jose in my 40 I think I either dropped a valve, or it is way out of adjustment or i have a bad injector. It still has the same power, but when at high RPM it has a knock and a lot of smoke when I started it cold the next day. Looks like I will be wrenching on it in the airport parking lot when I get back Monday morning. This was really the first distance trip I have taken in it although it really isnt that far(200km). I am hoping that the valves are just out of whack.

There's a reason why I carry more tools with me while travelling in Central America than most mechanics have in their shops!! When I did my frame swap last year in Tegucigalpa, Honduras I had the most tools and everyone borrowed them for the weeks work.

There are good mechanics out there but not very many.

was just the the mechanic's this morning working on stuff (new master brake cylinder) and one of the guys asked to borrow my c-clip pliers. His comment "its so much easier than using two screwdrivers filed to a point"

me: "Ya think?" shaking head....

fun times :)
