Hi guys

Need a bit technical information on portal axcles, See a few 80's with portal axcles, anyone done the conversion on the 105 ?

What are the costs involved ?
What is the gear ratio's compares to normal 105's gear ratio ?
How doe the conversion influences normal onraod driving ?

The gears are fairly low mid 5:1s to high 7:1s, I can't remember all the possible ratios.

The cost varies as most of them a military surplus and shipping is a big part of it. As well as your level of fabrication avability.

Onroad driving would suffer as most all of them will come with drum brakes. The lower gear ratios would also decrease your top speed.

Volvo axles are the most practical for this.
They are under C303s and C304s. Sure about the C303, could be wrong on the C304, but the earlier is 4x4, the latter 6x6.
Unimog axles are available, but seem to be more work and money to fit, and the gearing is offroad only.
For Volvo, two gear ratios available: 5.99 and 7.xx?
If 105s use the same axles as 80s, then follow TiredIron's thread exactly.
Changing the axles alone will net 5 inches of lift, plus whatever you get from taller tires.
When I priced a set of 5.99 axles in Colorado within the last 12 months, it was $4500US.

TiredIron said the brakes were pretty good with his 39.5" Iroks.

While they are drums, they were designed to stop a heavier rig with taller tires.

Rims must be original Volvo, or custom made.

you may want to ask in the 80 forum as well, more folks will have done the conversion over there...

(see, that'll teach you have a hybrid vehicle and make us US guys all jealous... :) )

PortalTek
The holy grail of portal axles.;)

They will build an axle to meet your needs.

Sunray Engineering
They have been known to build Ford 9" hybrid axles with portal boxes.

If you search on portal axles you will find more info.
