It may have been Landtank who once mentioned that perhaps if we could drive our rigs at once fully modified, we might be horrified at how the incremental modifications had altered a once pleasant driveability. I am now a believer ..

I would have sworn on a stack of bibles today that my 80's dirveability could not improve one bit. I was wrong  I drove back to my hotel tonite from Slee Offroad, after a day of fairly lightweight mods. Light perhaps, but as I discovered mods which when overlooked during a buildup would leave the driver at a disadvantage.

To shed light on what my objectives were, here is a short list so far:

- Level the 80 front to rear
- remove the lateral translations out of the axles post lift
- Tighten up the steering a bit
- Widen the 80's stance

To these ends, Adrian and Brian went to work and did the following:

- Added Slee 4" coils up front (as per Christo's suggestion)
- Added adjustable panhard rods
- Installed new drag link, and tie rod as well as new tie rod ends
- Installed the 1.5" wheel spacers

And the results:

My 80 is perfectly level now. The axles are both centered under the truck, and the steering is improved with the new equipment. The wheels spacers fattened out the 80's stance to where it should always have been .. looks great!!

All I can say is the driveability now is unreal! I never saw it coming .. I have NO vibrations with the 4" coils, and now the truck is so easy to drive, I realize that up until now I was living with a truck that had become a bit of a chore to drive. Not a huge effort, but still slightly twitchy and such. I know this to be true because I drove along tonite with apprehension to be honest. Not because of what had been modified, but because of what we haven't done yet .. trim the mudflaps, and then some:eek: So I drove into the dark with the music off so I could hear if anything rubbed .. This fear was born of some rubbing heard as I backed down a slope out of Slee's lot .. as I discovered along the drive this would not be repeated while driving forwards. But it was in this silent drive that I REPEATEDLY realized something was quite tangeably different. Words like effortless, quiet, smooth, predictable, effortless, effortless .... did I mention effortless?

The 80 is slightly firmer in the front over some bumps, but nothing I'd worry about .. and the driveabilty is quite noticeable.

Bottom line .. if you are building your 80, do NOT just overlook the small stuff; the less glamorous bits. They quickly add up to a monumental change in how your 80, and perhaps your DD performs day in day out .. mile after mile.

Like Nike says .. Just do it!

Peace,

TY

Well said. I'm sure things will change when you bring it back to Canada and put a couple ugly fat Canadian chicks in it though....

Don't make me wake up Romer on you nimrods .. :flipoff2:

I think you just learned why building on top of OME is a highly inferior solution to buying a kit designed for the taller lift. Those higher spring rates make all the difference in the world.

Now go and get some Bilsteins (use the MAF shock adapters so you can have an eye to eye mount). 12" 5100 series with 1" shock adapters on each end might be just the trick....just pay attention to those bumpstops because you'll be spacing suspension travel down 2"-2.5" over the OME shocks in order to keep those 36's in the right place.

Nay

Ty- so you're usnig the Slee 4" coil up front and an OME 2.5 in the rear?

I want clarity because I might be following your lift advice in the next year.

I just went back into the shop to double check Doc .. and yeah, 863 OME rear and Slee 4" front. We began ramping this AM, and decided to keep the 36's off the front mudflaps we'd install Slee front control arms. They have also trimmed the rear mudflaps .. they made custom rear 3" boxed bumpstop blocks, and have lowered the front 2"

I'll be holding my breath as we take it for a test drive with the new arms. Not sure how the change in castor will play into driveability and vibes etc.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Oh, and Christo will be snappin shots of the ramp tests later!

TY

Atually those arms are a much better choice for those springs in my opinion. They are set at 5* which if your truck is close to mine should put you close to center in the caster range and a bit better lined up on that front diff. I'm sure they will work great.

Rick,

You should see this thing -

You're right on the money ... Brian at the shop took it out for a spin after it was all done, and we all held our breath. Five minutes later he cruised back into the shop with a smile and announced it drove better than before!

Christo figures we hit the sweet spot .. between the mating of his 4" coils and custom control arms.

I'm simply blown away .. like having a stock-drving 80 .. except it's sitting on 36's that it can fully stuff.

Good to hear TY. My first drive when I finally got everything dialed in was a real eye opener to say the least. That drive home will really impress you I'm sure.

Now drop the plastic for some 4.88s and you won't be able to keep the smile off your face.

So now you are in Colorado with a 4" lift and 36" IROKs that stuff perfectly and it drives like a dream. Sounds like you're ready for a snow run :flipoff2:

Christo has all the pics .. someone pressure him to post up the Starbucks ramp shots! :grinpimp:

Note: So far the trip is going great!! 700 miles so far today .. and it drives quiet, effortlessly, and high!

Cheers,

TY

PS: A full writeup is coming once I get home and settle in tomorrow ..
