Hi there,
i'm looking for the following parts for my '85 BJ70 diesel..
-snorkel. (oem? whats the best fit?)
-lift kit. (brand? skies the limit sure but.. how high?)(light off roading)
-tire/wheel package (depending on lift.. how big can i go without moving axles?).
-oil/oil filter.
-fluids. (diffs/tranny/coolant etc.?)
-fuel addatives?

just wondering what the norm is? new to the 4x4 scene and i'm getting mixed reviews from a lot of ppl both in the generic 4x4 side and the landcruiser side.. i've heard both good and bad things about ome etc. as for fluids i know my truck has had synthetic oil all the time, but what would you use in your diffs for example. i want what's best for my truck as i intend to keep it for a while i hope.. any input would be greatly appreciated.. .. mb.

for snorkel safari
about the lift kit... i'm sorry because my car still in stock...
about the tires in europe bf or cooper are the most popular
about engine oil, people should know where are you from because you can't use the same oil in canada or in brazil... i use sae 15/40 (europ) mineral for gear box, i use sae 75/90 and for dif sae 90 (in rear dif. i add a additive for lsd dif.)
regards

I think any snorkel designed for the 70 series will be a good fit. I have an airflow snorkle with a safari head and it fits well, looks good and performs as it should.
As for a lift kit well again i dont have one because i think the standard leaves perform better offroad than any lifted leaves. But i have heard good things about OME and EFS lifts. You could always do a 1inch shackle lift and 1inch body lift which would be alot cheaper and would most probably ride better because you are keeping your old soft leaves.
You can go up to a 33inch tyre without moving axles (moving axles is not that big a deal though- its easier than putting in a lift kit) which is a good option for both on road driving and off road driving. You wont lose too much power with 33's and it will look the goods aswell. I have 35x12.5 Wrangler MTRs and i find them fantastic for on and off road. My friend has Cooper ST's which is also a good compromise for both (more orientated to the road though).
As for fluids i just get what is reccommended at the store at the time. Bigger name the better

Welcome
Snorkel, OEM works fine, i have a couple, bit more of a bitch to install and a LOT more money. Safari has stood the test of time for me but a lot of money for a piece of plastic.
Lift, go with Dakar, best bang for the buck.
tires, go no bigger than 33 skinnies if your truck is still NA and if you live in Canada. i have run the 35s but on a NA vehicle the 5th gear becomes redundant. reloacting the frotn axle ahead an inch will be required for 35s or bigger (as well as the lift)
oil, depends on how often you replace the oil. i like factory filters but that being said i use fram for my bush pig and cheap dino oil and change it often. on the road rigs i use factory and semi synth.
diff fluids, if you use the truck in mud and water a lot then cheap 80/90. if the truck will hardly ever see mud and water then full syth is fine. no use spending goo dmoney on fluids if you are changing them out every other month due to contamination.
fuel additives, Howles fuel treatment and a can of seafoam before every second oil change.

okay,
so basically a safari snorkel is the way to go, and just use synthetic/best price fluids in the truck and since a toyota dealer is right accross the street i'll stick to factory (if they got 'em) filters..
as for the lift.. i'm satisfied with the stock ride height.. but my rear springs are shot (fronts are new), so i'm in the market for rears at least.. probably new shocks too.. toyota in vancouver has no stock springs available and a local contact wants $400 for the pair of used stock rear springs.. kind of at a cross road. do i put the money into used gear or new gear? ome seems to be the all the rage. and heck want the extra security.
but does anyone have any experience rearching springs?
tires/wheels? well i'd love a set of two piece rims with 33" pizza cutter tires.. lol.. kinda a fetish i guess i have..

that being said does anyone have any of these parts available?.. worth a shot....

ps.. sis in oz for a month.. should i ask her to bring anything back for me?..

thanks a bunch.. mb.

if you are going factory snorkel then contact Mike at westcoastcruisers, he was selling 'new takeoffs' for very reasonable...

For filters I am using Fleetguard. They are used on all heavy duty engines eg. cummins, all the big diesel tractors on the farm have them as well, they must be decent and are cheaper than toyota.
I run Amsoil synthetic oil in my tranny and transfer and have had it in my diffs as well. It is possible you have synthetic already in your tranny, could be why it shifts so smooth! just a guess.
I have been using Chevron Delo 400 for as long as I have owned my truck, apparantely it is really good for the Dino oil.
I think I will give that Seafoam a try before my next oil change, I guess you can't really tell if it does anything, so more for peace of mind? I went to their website says they sell it at Napa, what size do you get? and do you just dump the whole thing in the oil filler?
Wayne which semi syn are you using?

Seafoam:
you dump it into the crankcase as normal proceedure, no need to remove the filter.

Rottella T full synth 0/30 winter / 15/40 summer

Rearching springs is a hit and miss affair and depends upon how far they are gone and the repairer.
IMO you are better off saving your money for a new set .
The rear springs are the same as the 60 series and $400 is a rip off considering they are under $200 each new in oz (which is like $150 or less CND)
As far as spring brands go,there is plenty of others besides OME who have been trading on an reputation some say they no longer deserve.

Best tyres for you might be 33x9.5x15 BFG M/T
