I sold my LV to a Canadian fellow. He is on his way back to Canada now. He called yesterday asking for an IRS number or my SS number. Saying that the US is requiring that info. Seems weird to me?
I provided a notarized title and also a notarized bill of sale.
I trust the buyer, but don't want to give out my SS number.
Anybody have any insight on this? Thanks

My guy got it thru the boarder with no ss # required.

@Living in the Past I got tired of the LV just sitting there. It was time to pass it along.
Got any projects you wanna sell at reasonable prices?

So this is called a routed export transaction. They wanted your tax ID, as you are the USPPI (United States Principle Party of Interest). Although your aren’t technically the exporter, you are considered so by the US. Census (BIS), which manages export declarations for statistical purposes.
This is really more for commercial transactions, and your buyer likely got it through by confirming it was just a personal sale/border crossing.

not that any of this matters now, but maybe helpful for some future person. Glad it worked out for you!
Best
Abe
