howdy, recently purchased a 1969 fj55 from a buddy of mine. this fj55 was going to be his next project to work on.

the truck appears to have the original engine, is this a 1f or a 2f
? there is a sticker on the side of the valve cover that says F 145.

thank you for your time.

Engine ID Stamping Location

look at the passenger side of the engine...see my pictures. I have never owned an f engine that has enything other than just the letter F. there may be other engine numbers, but there ya go.

Thought I'd help out, Dave;)

Really hard to tell from that little pic...but it almost looks like the oil filter is down by the dizzy...making it a late F ('74ish).

Welcome aboard!

Since we're also discussing F motors, why do some have the oil filter near the dizzy and others like mine have it near the carb?

The late F (F.5, 1.5F) had a different oiling system from the early F (like yours).
Early F had a partial flow oilfilter and external bypass valve.
Late F had a system very similar to the 2F...

Hmmm. I need to get my manual and see what the external bypass valve looks like. I didn't realize since I was just looking at the one oil filter on my F. Pighead knows. Thanks.

This is what the right side of an F.5 ('73, '74) engine looks like. It's called a transition engine because it used the new oiling system that was to debut in '75, like Pighead mentioned above.

The oil pressure regulator would be mounted in the center below the line of freeze plugs. If that is what your '69 has consider yourself a lucky man. I think it is a much better engine than the straight F.
