IFS calipers

I have been trying to do as much reading as possible before swapping in FJ60 axles and disks, but haven't found the answer to this one. Can I use any 4runner calipers, specifically the S12-8 ones? I have read something that says that the 86-95 calipers will not work. And I read another page saying that 86-88 truck calipers were what was needed. Why not simply purchase the FJ60 series calipers and rotors?

It seemed like a nice benefit to have the vented disks, plus the 4runner calipers are very easy to get and therefore cheap. The link I posted listed the IFS calipers too

edit; I guess after reading more, I could get vented rotors with the 60 calipers too. Is there any disadvantage to using the IFS calipers? There seemed a general preference to using the IFS calipers although it escapes me at the moment what the advantage was.

I think the advantage is that the pistons in the caliper are all large rather than two large two small.. More piston surface area, better performance?

i'm not positive on the years butt i think its like 89-92 4 runner with a v6 has the calipers with the large pistons. they say if your running 35s or bigger it helps with braking. i got those calipers from the wrecking yard and then bought fj 60 vented rotors for my mini truck conversion. havent acually done it yet though.

I've got 60 knuckles with the V6 4Rrunner calipers on my 40. I think the Runner calipers have 4-40mm pots per caliper vs the FJ40 calipers with 2-35mm, 2-28mm pots. The stopping force is great, but some folks have trouble with the stock master cylinder having enough volume to operate properly. I think the FJ80 master has a 1" bore which is suppose to solve that problem.

Strange coincidence, browsed this thread and then went looking for some parts and ran across this seller on ebay, calipers jumped out at me, suggests the late 60 and the 4runner are the same calipers?

4 cyl Toyota mini truck vehicles here in the USA used a similar size piston caliper to the ones found on the 60 series, two small and two large, opposed to the V6 Toyota mini truck vehicles that used a caliper that had four large/equal sized pistons.

The calipers use the same effective mounting configuration, however, the backing plate/dust shield will need to be trimmed to allow the caliper to fit when the larger piston calipers are installed on a Land Cruiser and that dust shield is retained.

i decided to use a master cylinder of a 75 vette witch was stock with 4 wheel disc. and no vacum booster. the master cylinder was like 30 bucks i think at local parts store. got all this info. from this site

Thanks for bringing that up. I have a '66 FJ40 and I would like to incorporate a booster. That means I need to use a spacer like the one I found at MAF. It is $70 though, so does anybody know of a cheaper option. Preferably something that supports a small guy. Could I assume the FJ80 booster would have the same bolt spacing as, say a '76 booster?

Do a search here on MUD. You want to use a Toyota 4wd mini-truck booster.

Regarding $70 for the firewall spacer for your '66 FJ40 that is not that bad $$-wise, unless you are able to fab it yourself.
