Hey Guys,
I have a 1HD-T and I am wondering what your idle at when you start them.. now that it is cold out I am having a lot of trouble getting mine to stay running once it starts, and finally when it does it seems to idle really low.. I am wondering if my idle needs to be adjusted and how to do it.. thanks, Darren

There is some idle adjustment on the fuel pump. There is a screw that when turned will increase/decrease the idle rpm by pushing the throttle cable.

If you have a hand throttle you could also give that a try in the mornings.

thanks.. I've adjusted the idle to be at 850rpm when warm, but the problem seems to be in the morning when its cold....I try to set the hand throttle and the thing just keeps stalling out....I can't get it to stay running.. I tried putting an additive into the gas this evening to help prevent gelling and clean injectors etc.. I'll see how that goes ... any other help would be appreciated,
thanks...

Now that winter is settling upon us your engine may need a little assistance to start, and stay running for the 1st bit in the morning.

Is your glowplug system working? Are your glowplugs ok? Get the factory manual and go through the diagostics listed in it.

You may well end up having to wire in an overide switch, as has been detailed on this site, however 1st ensure your glow system is working per manual, then check the plugs. If both check out fine, then look into the switch. It lets you supply more glow on startup.

Where you are I would consider installing a lower rad hose heater as well...

Sounds like your automatic cold start device (ACSD) is no longer working (that's one of the things that often seems to go on these cruisers). I'm confused though why the hand throttle isnt helping. Is it working? You should be able to set your idle at pretty much any level with the hand throttle. You twist it to lock it.

sorry...no gas..I meant to say a gas like additive...oops (New to deisels).

Also I agree in saying that the acsd isn't working right... any tips on solving this problem.. heard of guys plugging them ...does it work??? the pull throttle does work, and it would rev up, but then it would die out on me...

I let the truck sit for 3+ hours tonight, and then went out and started it.. she fired up and kept running with no problems.. I will try things out again in the morning.. I am hoping that possible there was some gelling going on and that the additive cured whatever was potentially wrong..here's hoping!!....thanks for the posts guys, and keep firing opinions to me and I'll hopefully get to the bottom of it.. thanks again...

is it possible that it was stalling out due to running too rich??? this morning things started o.k. and it ran at idle for about 20 min before it moved at all....but as oon as i reved it up a bit is when it went haywire with the stalling out again.... i noticed that when i stepped on the accelerater that i had a ton of black smoke out the back....i tuned it up now so there is little to no black smore at all when I hit it... let me know if you think this could be the problem?? also fill me in on the ACSD removal if there is one.. I have no idea.. thanks,

Diesels dont run rich like a gasser but they make black smoke from too much fuel or from the fuel being inadequately atomised.

How did you tune it? You may have turned the fuel down which it probably needed.
When they are overfuelled they intitially dump big droplets of fuel which can make them stall when cold and blow black smoke.

The ACSD is attached to the side of the pump but I would leave it alone until you are satisfied its not working.
It advances the pump timing when cold ,mainly as an anti pollution device

I did notice a big droplet of fuel on the driveway yesturday!! I also did turn the fuel down with the screw slightly below the the idle set screw!!! I just went out to start the truck and it fired up on the 3rd try... seemed to be idling strong.. I let it run for a few minutes and will try again in a couple of hours once things get cold again.. for now WAY WAY WAY less black smoke and idle seems o.k.

all other help/opinions are still appreciated... tell me more about thei ACSD!!

biggest problem seems to be when I hit the fuel hard.. then let it drop back to idle..it doesnt' seem to pick back up, but it ends up stalling out on me !! HELP!!

Well when its cold the lever is held in place by a wax pellet.
When warm coolant flows from the engine through the 2 hoses the wax melts and the lever is returned to its warm position.
I havent worked out how it gets back to its cold position ready for start up.
The non turbo 1HZ dont have the ACSD and have a blanking plate coveriing the hole on the pump housing.
Most diesel shops in oz remove it when it plays up.
See G&S Cruisers ,they may have a spare blanking plate;)
Dont forget to block off the 2 coolant hoses

do you think the blanking plate might be the solution to my problems??

Before you think about pulling the ACSD make sure its acting up.

Above the fuel pump is a minimum idle set screw which sets the minimum throttle position. Try adjusting this so your mimimum idle is pretty high when cold (say 900 rpm). If this stops your stalling issue then I'd say it is likely the ACSD is at fault (it is probably sticking).

Btw its not totally necessary to replace/remove the acsd right away, I've been driving mine for a year now with a similar problem, just using the min. idle screw to stop the idle from getting too low.

thanks for the info.. my fuel is gelled... crap
