So tonight I installed the head, put oil on the bolt threads, torqued it all down then I notice that there is oil on the head gasket between the head and block. I ASSume I put too much oil on the treads... Anybody had this issue? TIA

If there was oil or any fluids in the holes where the head bolts go it could of caused them to hydraulic action. In a worst case this can cause the block to crack.

It could also not allow the gasket to seal well on the block side, know also you do not have a good value on that bolt for your torque pattern.
I personally would pull all the bolt, pull the gasket, clean it all up, then bolt it back together again. Making sure you clean all the bolt holes before doing the most important parts of the job, besides cleaning.

This is true. Only oil the bolts if stated in the service manual because the torques are affected quite a bit between a lubed bolt and a dry one.

Warped head?

I'd pull the head back off, blow the bolt holes out with air, wipe all surfaces down with solvent and reinstall the head. I think you had enough oil in the bottom of at least one bolt hole to disturb its torque and unless you did something to only THIS bolt somehow, then odds are others are also problematic and you've got uneven torque. One item I don't know what to recommend is how to properly clean the head gasket itself without damaging the surface film. Anyone?

Thanks for the info guys! Think I'll go ahead and pull it back down replace the gasket and bolts(original bolts) and clean it all up. Expensive mistake! :frown: :bang:

... I ASSume I put too much oil on the treads...

For proper assembly the oil needed is only enough to make the bolt shinny. Light, spray type oil or motor oil applied then blown off, when laid on a rag, shouldn't leave a mark.

I dipped the threaded portion of the bolt into a cup of oil then inserted them into the motor. next time I'll use very little oil........

If you clean up the gasket it should be ok. That said if some the gasket sticks to the surface of the block and gets ripped off, then I would replace the gasket. Most of the time, if you have not started the engine. The gasket will not have adheared to the surface of the block. You may be able to reuse the gasket.
I usually lube the blots after cleaning them. I allow them to sit for a good bit of time allowing the lube to flow through the thread and into the rag under the bolts. i also lube the washers be fore I put them on the bolt.
good luck.

I'd not fret about the bolts. I've reused 80 bolts 3 times and they were all measured by a machinist to easily meet the spec in the manual. These are quality bolts. Consider getting a tap to clean the threads for maximum peace of mind as to getting the correct torque. Blow the threads out, run the tap, blow again, lightly lube the bolt and washer as noted and slap 'er together. If you want you could buy a couple bolts with the understanding you can return them for a stocking fee if unneeded so they're on hand. But if you have a machinist measure them then you are quite safe in reusing them. I felt this was worth slipping a machinist $10 to use his skill on ensuring they spec'd out well.

No big deal here - you're doing the right thing.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I think I will have the bolts checked again, especially since a new set is around $200
Not sure if I'll re-use the head gasket, I'd hate to tear this thing down again.....;p FOR SALE (almost new) Toyota head gasket
