I made an automatic Turbo timer.

I'm in the middle of fixing 30 years worth of bad previous owner wiring, and I came up with something pretty trick.

The previous US owner of this truck put in 2 of these Auber instruments guages. They are really neat because you can program them to read pretty much any sensor under the sun.
Another neat feature of these is a built-in programmable relay. It's just a contact that you can program to open or close at various readings.

I used this contact to switch a bigger external relay that keeps the fuel cut-off solenoid powered until the EGT's dip below 370f.

Ignore mess in the pic, this was just my proof of concept. I am waiting on some metri-pack stuff before I do the final wiring.

If anyone wants any more info of this mod, I can draw up some diagrams and post them.

I have to stick to EU rules, leave a car running unoccupied is a big no no, big fines ect. I just sit and for a minute before shutting off. IIRC all JDM markets get a timer, but it is removed during import?

My engine is cooled by an electric fan though, so this is programmed to run on for five minutes after the engjne is shut down.

Regards

Dave

Mine still has the timer in the truck, but it’s disabled.

You could reconnect it assuming legal or.............?

You can purchase a 'run on' time from ebay, about 5 quid.

My 90 did not have a factory timer, but it did have a Japanese aftermarket timer, and it did function. It looked like a little radar detector, I got sick of it taking up space on my center console.

None of my JDM imports have had turbo timers equipped (2X HDJ81's and a '96 Hilux Surf), but I do have my command start set up to keep the truck running for 2min if you pull the ebrake handle before removing the key.

When the truck is running, the Black/Green wire is powered from the ignition switch, and is providing power to our Auber guage.

When the EGT's are above your threshold(370 for me) the "Temperature controlled" auber contact will be closed.

With that contact closed, the external relay will be energized, this will provide constant 12v from the battery, and it will keep the Auber
guage on and the Engine running, since it will keep the fuel cut-off energized as well.

If the truck is shut off with the EGT's above threshold, the following will happen:

1. The green wire will no longer be Energized from the ignition switch, but will still be energized through the external relay contact.

2. The Auber gauge is also being kept on through the External relay.

3. When the temps fall Below threshold, the "temperature controlled contact" will open.

4. With that contact open, the External relay will De-energize, cutting power to the Fuel Cut-off which will kill the engine.

5. The External Relay will also cut power to the Auber Gauge.

Edit: I updated the schematic to add a Kill button to cancel the timer.

I used an Auber pyrometer in my first Prado and really liked it; the price was right too! That one had no problems in the cold. I also helped install one on my brother’s HDJ81, and occasionally during the winter it will have a fit for a few minutes while it warms up. I bought a double like the one above for my current Prado, one readout will be a pyrometer and the other will be coolant temp, and the relay output on the coolant side will be used to control the electric radiator fan. I am thinking of doing a similar setup for turbo timer as well.
