I feel like there should be a thread on stories of confusion over fj40s. Do you guys get jeep people waving at you? I had a guy try to give me a duck recently. I refused of course. I honestly had more people knowing what my kzj78 is over my fj40. sombody should make T shirts that have a picture of a fj40 on and a cj7 that points out the differences.

Yesterday a guy said he loved my budget model jeep. tried to tell me that jeep has always made the land cruiser and that the land cruiser model was the cheeper model sold under amc and that the jeep branded one was better. one of those unreasonable people. I tried to tell the guy this thing was made in japan and far superior to a cj7.... I honestly thought he was pulling my leg but he was serious!

I say all this and I really would love to have a m38 or a willys one day along side the fj40.

anyways I would love to hear other peoples stories!
These 3 get along.

Just curious, what does the "J" in fj40 stand for? 😆

Chassis and transmission from a 1-ton truck but the biggest thing was an engine from a 4-ton truck. That was the big difference from the the Willys and Rover from that time.

Hello,

And quite a difference it was.

I guess that is where the Land Cruiser's "overbuilt" reputation began.

Now that you mention it, the frame rails of a Jeep or a Land Rover look small when compared to those of a Land Cruiser.

Funny, same thing with me... Neighbor came and asked about my "jeep" , and I asked how is Hyundai is doing. (He has a Mercedes). I said they look the same.....
Reminded me of

Nothing wrong with a little flat fender action.

It's not the Jeeps that are the problem, it's the bottom dweller, lowest common denominator owners which flock to them.

If you own, have owned, wrench on, praise, cuss at and use the crap out of a Jeep or Jeep product, ain't nuthin' wrong with that.

But if you buy a Jeep to have an identity to replace your lack of one, THAT'S the folk we love to poke fun at.

Hello,

It appears that hands-on wrenching Jeep owners are a minority. I know of two.

The marketing associated with Jeeps is almost as ridiculous as that associated with Harley Davidson

Think "there is only one jeep" tops the list of most ridiculous marketing phrase. Especially with all the different owners jeep has had over the years. Even Willy's Overland was handed a vehicle designed from Bantam prior to WWII because military didn't feel Bantam was a large enough to handle the production needs.

Don't have any friends who own a jeep but have a friend who has a one ton Ram diesel pickup. He doesn't appreciate me asking how his Fiat is holding up.

yes exactly
pretty sure thats what the J in J40, J70 etc stands for.... thing is, it was a military vehicle spec designation for a type of vehicle, not a brand or model, without the war none of would have these vehicles....
mitsubishi made a 'jeep' too as well as some others

pretty sure the J meant made in japan, as all Toyotas have J as the first character in the VIN of a Japanese made Toyota

i could be wrong, wouldnt be the first time

Today yes but wasn't always that way. Early cars imported by Toyota did not have a J in the VIN. Original only Land Cruisers had the J right after a letter that showed the type of engine installed.

Living at the beach I see lots of jeep people every year. This is how it seems: People that come down with older cj or willys/m38 are car guys and are usually pretty cool and actually appreciate the land cruiser for what it is. The new jeep gladiator/4door jeep crowd that are the ones tearing up the beach and acting wacky throwing ducks at each other. These are the people that give me the jeep wave. Speaking of the gladiator does anybody else feel it should have been called the scrambler? The Gladiators were full size trucks made by jeep if I am not mistaken.

speaking of the jeep wave, I do get the land cruiser and fjcruiser wave a-lot. 200 series cruisers are hit or miss though as I think the owners sometimes don't care about the land cruiser part as much as the luxury part of the 200 series.

FJ40s are 45 years plus old and the reality is that most people's frame of reference are Jeeps unless they are true car people. When someone says nice Jeep I say thank-you, smile and wave. If they engage and start asking questions about Louie, I will then take the time to explain it is not a Jeep. Sadly there are fewer and fewer people that really know or care about cars.

FJ = FJ Cruiser in this particular cult. 😆
I can't get my wife to shake off calling it an FJ. At this point I almost rather her call it a Jeep.

We had a 2013 Wrangler Sport. It was my wife’s, she bought it brand new. What a worthless piece of sh*t. Forget trying to get into the back seat, unless you’re a seven year old. I lost track of how many times the CEL came on. The engine would randomly shut off. We were doing 70-75 on the Gulf freeway in traffic in the center lane and it f*cking shut off. The A/C would also randomly just shut completely off. Finally we couldn’t renew registration because of the CEL. We took it to the dealership, who told us the engine had to be rebuilt, at 58K miles. I took it to a Land Cruiser specialist in Houston, he worked some magic, then straight to Carmax and cashed it out. The front drive had never been engaged. Never again.
