I did it. My '91 broke past 18mpg.

On recent long haul trip: with new rotor, dist. cap and u-joint (thanks Dan), beater 31.10 tires on stock 15 wheels, driving 55 to 60 (with short runs at 65) with no cruise control, I averaged 17.76 to 18.34mpg. I almost couldn't believe it, I had to triple-check to be sure.

Before trip I replaced the partial front bumper with a full bumper from a '97 LX450 and removed third-row, but she was still loaded.
Also had the bike rack with bike on back. Removed Yakima but still had original roof rack on top.
I believe the full bumper helped smooth airflow around and past the tires. Oh, and I even used the chilly ac intermittently.

Prior to all this, best gas mileage was almost 17 mpg.

I'm thinking, take out second row, remove roof rack, smooth roof, sans bike and bike rack, fix and use cruise control, give it a good wax, remove side-rails, replace tires, I should be able to crack 19 mpg.

And the trip proved my re-location of EFI relay in air duct inside passenger cab works - no problem with the EFI relay overheating.

Long live the mighty 3FE.

Hmm, I call shenanigans

Truly, well done. Why do you think you see such better numbers than others around here? The 31" tires? Doesn't seem like you treated any differently than most (though the 55mph is awfully lenient)

I only wish I could pull that off... Nicely done sir. ;)

good deal all around...

especially on the EFI relay relocation, I believe this is THE FIX for all the EFI relay troubles we have in the 3fe.

lucky!

best I get is 14

AWESOME!!!
I have a '92-3FE, can someone point me to a thread/FAQ on this "re-location of EFI relay in air duct inside passenger cab works - no problem with the EFI relay overheating." tech-thread?

Hey voorland80, do you have a front shot showing the new bumper on your rig?

If you clean the contacts inside the cruise control module, you might get 20mpg.

We are not that far apart and my LC is an expedition build - 12 mpg!

I regularly get 17-18mpg hiway in my 91 by keeping it at/under 60mph.

On a stock rig in good tune, I really think there are only two significant factors: Tire pressure and speed.

Admit it: Most of us are simply incapable and/or unwilling to honestly and consistently drive at or below 60mph.

I get great gas mileage once in a while, maybe 16.8 MPG..but I have come to a conclusion...(now you must have your vehicle maint'd and tuned properly)

it has alot to do with the quality of gas you get ....if you are getting bad MPG's try another gas station....

I also found out that you must get several tank fulls before you can come to a good result...

If I was getting 16 or better MPG's..I would stick with the gas I am currently getting...

if I was getting worse than 16.....I would at least give another brand a try and see what you come up with...

IMO...........

peace....

Great mileage voorland!

Was it calculated going down that mountain in the background of your pic? j/k :D

I guess I must be too lazy to attempt to figure out my best mpg.
I know it's crappy, but don't care enough to know just how crappy it is.

I have been creeping up on the mythical 17mpg, I got 16.8 on a 90 mile leg of a 200 mile trip this weekend , cruise set at 74 on the speedo actually 77mph used ac on downhill sections. I have not filled up since returning the 200 miles. will update when I do. I have been logging every fillup, with grade of gas and location purchased. I do see a difference between gas stations, and my average is at 14.5. From my notes I get better mpg on 88 than on 85 octane and the exspensive stuff is not worth it as I don't see any increase. I am running a fuel addative (ca40), can prove it is doing something as if I do not add, after two tanks my mpgs drop back to 11.5 this is mostly on my daily commute to work. Parking facing out and fuel addative has gained me 3 mpg. And I drive the speed limit or a little over. I tried the going slow, but with the power of the 1fze I can't seem to stay off the skinny pedal. And when I say power remember my dd for the previous 3 years was a 85 60 series on 33's...

I'm glad when I get 12. I got around 8 this last tank towing a trailer at 75mph. lol.

I used to be stationed in Georgia and when driving from Ohio to there, would get 15 plus, but then when I had to go back uphill to Ohio, could only get 14. Just head south and you'll get better mileage.

Seriously, good job, I can't keep it below 70 on my commute though!

Cheers

How did you judge your mileage, factory odometer? If your tires are less than stock size, your odometer would read more distance than actually traveled, thus skewing your results.

Either way, I'd much rather drive 80 and get 12 MPG on burly 37s.

Thanks all.
Not sure why. I do run Pennzoil full-synthetic in engine, but regular dino oil in diffs. Also have tires aired up.

I thought I had pics of the bumper - I will have to take some.

On EFI relay,

I posted here (#16),

I didn't pull it out during winter and it was fine.

PM me if you need any more detail.

Thanks.
