OK , today was the day. I pulled the manifold....yes I hate that last bolt in the back.....I pulled the cover, rocker arm, all the head bolts according to the Toyota 2F manual....and it will not budge. Does anyone have any help to offer....am I missing something...I also pulled the thermostat housing, the water pump.... I tried prying with a screwdriver on the slot on the side opposite the manifold.......nothing.

Thanks
Dwight

On my old 40 (with a 1F) I had to stand in the engine compartment on the frame and pull it off that way while standing over the engine. It was fairly heavy and I could have easily thrown my back out so be careful if you go that route. That was the only way I could get enough leverage on it.

Get a hammer. lol I am kinda serious though I hit mine with a plastic dead blow a couple time in an area that wouldn't damage anything and yes it is really heavy so that might be another reason. I actually used a cherry picker to pick it up off the block and out of the truck. If you don't have one get a few beers and ask a buddy or two to come by and help out

To break it loose screw one of the mainfold bolts back in and use it as a jacking point. Put a bottle jack in there with some dunnage...2 x 4 wood blocks or whatever and use the bottle jack to bush it off the block. Once it breaks free use your imagination and some help to lift it off. It's heavy so be careful...:banana::beer::beer::cheers:

I have done all this

Is there any thing beside the head bolts holding the head on ??

This might sound silly but I cannot get it to budge. I even put a 4X4 from the ground up and a floor jack to put upward pressure and nothing...it looks like it might lift the side of the cruiser off the ground......I am stuck.!!!

I suppose if you put a semi-tight air nozzle in a plug hole you could pressurize a cylinder. I did this once to change the valve stem seals. Cylinder area is approx. 11 inches.
So if you had 30 PSI, 30 *11=330 pounds of force pushing up. That would probably work.

I put a pry bar on mine and put tension on it, went to bed. It popped overnight.

Thanks everyone

I never got it free, I did however leave a small floor jack with a pipe and a plastic tip under the manifold side jacked up.... perhaps it will break free tonight. I have it so torn down now I am considering pulling the engine, tranny, xfer case and doing a clutch job while I am at it.

If it doen't pop tonight just put pressure on it with the jack and hit it on the side with a plastic hammer, it will come.
ps. it is not your mother, so use some force while hitting.:grinpimp:

Many guys have met this challenge only to find they forgot to take out the middle bolt.

Yes, don't forget that middle bolt. Useing a bottle jack with that middle molt still in can cause 2 cylinder walls to crack. (please don't ask me how I know this)

Have I missed anything....head will not budge

Before I get out a bottle jack please take a look and see if I have missed anything on my 78 2F head removal....I worked at this late last night. I want to get this off so if you guys can spot anything in this montage I did please let me know.

Thanks
Dwight

Maybe crank it with the starter? With all the valves closed......:hmm:

EDIT: You do have the head bolt in the middle out, right? Looks like it in the top pic, but not in the last one.

Here is a picture

If you guys can spot anything I missed I would appreciate it;

X77. I forgot the middle bolt, while I was showing my teenage son the right way to take off the head, and I preached to him over and over again, "make sure you get all the bolts" and I am baning and prying away only to find I forgot th emiddle bolt

Look like from the pics you got the middle bolt. I like the air pressure model. Any help in cranking the engine by hand since the rockers are off, the compression cylinders might add some push:hmm:.

Is this the original gasket? If so it a metal top and bottom layer that can attach itself fairly well to the head and block. There are two metal alignment rings located front and rear between the head and block. You need to slowly drive a flat blade screw driver in the slot you were talking about. Drive it and if the head does not pop then leave the screw driver in the slot and come back in 15/30 minutes and drive it a little more. Just don't get stupid and wail on the wedge till you crack the head. A little wedge and wait done a couple of times will work.

Another pressure approach, you could put the sparkplugs, pushrods and the rockers back on(15 minutes). Put in a few head bolts and leave a 1/8" freeplay. Crank the engine over, as soon as it comes loose the compression will leak out the sides. Don't get to use this very often:deadhorse:.

I got it

I removed the battery tray, fuel pump and reinstalled the lift hook on the front. I made a base of wooden blocks on the engine mount and used a 3 ton bottle jack to put upward pressure on the front hook It almost straightened the hook out and I did not dare put more pressure...I then used a chisel to tap at the front of the block didn't have to tap much and it went big time. I got it pulled and the problem cylinders #5 and 6 did not look bad...even the valves looked OK. I can just hang a fingernail on the very top of the cylinders where the head goes.....the cylinder walls look mirror shiny. I had forgotten but when I bought this from the the Tpyota dealership they did a head gasket 8 months after I purchased this vehicle....that was way back in 1980....if you look whoever did this had covered the opening up in the front of the engine head....a poor job IMHO.

Here are some pics. I appreciate everyones help....what to do next ??
