Hey All,

Have been reading and learning a lot lately here on mud, now i need some help.

I've bought a 2002 hzj78 in june 2010.
I have this bad noise coming from transmission/transfer that i can't get rid off. Here's a movie, i don't think it needs any explanation

noise is very loud when i have transfer set in Neutral, transmission in 4th or 5th gear, and clutch UP.
Noise disappears directly when clutch is depressed.
Noise is gone after taking it for a drive, comes back when i don't drive it for about 2 hours. ( related to oil temperature ?? ) sometimes noise IS there after a drive, but not as loud, and usually only in 1st, 2nd, 3th gear ??????? i'm confused..

Since i've bought the cruiser from an official toyota dealer, i keep on getting back to them to have a look at it ; i've bought it with a 1 year warranty.

What they've done till now:

- new clutch (plate, pressure group, bearing )
- gearbox ( all parts have been inspected, bearings replaced )

Toyota dealer claims to be sure it doesn't come from the transfer box. they say the sound was still there after removing the transfer case.

Any help / ideas are greatly appreciated.

Cheers !!

That sounds horrible....
If the dealer has done what they said, then its in the transfercase.....
Is there a PTO cover to have a look inside?.
Any metal on the drain oil when drained for gearbox bearings.

Did the dealers actually do the gearbox bearings ?

thanks for your reply.

i know it sounds horrible :(
i also suspect the transfer case, although they keep on telling me they are really sure it is not.

there is a PTO cover as far as i know, although i don't have a clue what i would be looking for / what i would be able to see when opening ( don't have any background on cars / mechanics )

i also can't answer your last 2 questions, since i was not there when they did the repairs. The toyo dealer didn't even do this themselves, but sent it to a company specialised in transmission rebuilds.

do you have any logical explanation for the sound NOT being there after taking the car for a drive ?
