Can a HZJ77 with safari turbo and extreme duty valve body matched with a tranny cooler(automatic) tow a 22 ft airstream international that might weigh 5000lbs when fully weighted. Also how difficult is it to get a break controller and lighting harness for 24v(vehicle) to 12v(airstream)...no i'm not changeing any bulbs.

Thanks for the help!

It will tow that easily, but the heavier the load, the harder it will be to control in an emergency.
IMO, the maximum safe load is about 80% of the towing vehicle weight which is often much less than the legal load.

Will this rig tow?

I see your point but with trailer brakes and reasonable speed I would be good? The seller of the vehicle seems to think that land cruisers in general are not great towing vehicles...I agree there are stronger more powerful engines but a double axle airstream is a nice towing trailer and this rig is sweet. The difficulty is getting a simple solution for the 24v to 12v trailer brakes and light setup....If that can be done easily I think I might jump..the rig is sweet

Outback Imports - Used Toyota Landcruisers 4x4 Diesel for Sale

thats the only one that I knew of for sale.
He wants a s***load of bills for that puppy. I figure it would tow it no problem.

I had that HZJ77 sleep over at the shop for a few nights, and it is very sweet. HZJs in general fetch top dollar, and HZJ77s are very few and far between in that kind of condition. If I was in the market for an auto trans with lockers, I'd be all over that unit.

As for towing capacity, it should be able tow the trailer quite easily, just don't expect to go up mountain passes at full throttle if you have any respect for the longevity of the transmission and engine. My only concern would be stability in a dangerous braking situation or in high crosswinds. A better tow rig would be a full sized 3/4 or 1 ton diesel pick up, but then that's not all that fun or exciting is it?

Tends to send a shiver down your back everytime you see it:D. I think Toyota would have used in an advert if they had of though of it 1st

I have a HZJ77 with Extreme valve body and billet torque converter in the A440F as well as a Turbo glide turbo charger, slight lift, 33" tires and I think it will tow 5000lbs with no problems. I think you would be fine with the airstream but you need to put brake controller on it. Here is a few pics o mine, I think they are pretty rare in the US :D

The only problem the 1HZ with a turbo sometimes has when towing, is the engine overheating.
Some owners never seem to be able to cure it.

I have never seen an overheating problem, or had any overheating problems on a 1HZ. I would bet those they have had overheating problems are running a turbo and have it turned wrong. Just my 2 cents

Michael

Ive only read about others problems on aussie forums. They say they have done everything correctly ,but you can never be sure.
Some of them seem sincere though

Last sunday, my 73 series with the 1HZ,got quite hot in the sand hills and my temp gauge went up tio about 3/4
It also got a little hot on the highway at 120 kph.No turbo and a clean coolant system

One thing I have have noticed myself if the 1HZ engines from the Middle East run much cooler than the ones from OZ or Japan. I am not sure why maybe they are running the lower thermostat in them I never looked into much further but certainly noticed it. I will have to look at the thermostat at some point. I can see anything else that is different between them.

Cheers,

Michael

i would say NO. do not expect a HZJ77 to tow 5000 lbs comfortably.
the 1HZ is nice, the 1HZ-T is nicer, the 1HZ-TI is sweet but not a chance being able to tow 5000 lbs comfortably.
i have made this warning to many in Canada and yet watch them buy the truck and 2 years later sell them and buy NA diesels to do the tow.

it is your money, do what you want. i recommend 3500 lbs MAX to my customers unless it is a "twice a year" move the trailer to the camp ground or the boat to the lake move.

of course once you hear a couple blokes say "sure it will" and you get all horny over the truck, common sense goes out the window.

They are probably running anti freeze in the radiator and not normal coolant it has a higher boiling point.

I reckon your proposal/wish is too lite. WHat does it weigh roughly 2000kg=4200lb and 80% of that is around 3200-3300lb no way - at some point the rig is going to steer the truck usully over big bumps or under hard breaking or when the road is wet and windy. Even if the trailer is braked you would have that point (milliseconds) before the brakes on the trailer cut in when the trailer is in control and it may be enough to cause you a lot of grief.

been there once with a XJ JEEP and a camper trailer not pleasant.

now back to my beer.

Two dirt bikes and camping gear on the back of my old cruiser ute my old cruiser ute on a trailer with smashed gearbox towed by a 1hz 75 ute non turbo wasnt fast but did the job fairly comfortably and didnt get hot at all .that was a about 1 an 1/2 hour tow from to Perth
