Is there anyway to tell if a Japan market HZJ77 has the lockers option?

Aside from the locker control knob beside the heater control or the display in the RPM gauge can we find out from the VIN or from other identification numbers? This info doesn't seem to always make it's way on the auction sheet...

Thanks!

The switch is NOT a guarantee you will have lockers!!!

Check for the indicator lights on the dash and the numbers KOx4 on the vin tag relating to Axles/Gears (where x = 5 or 8 depending on ratio).

You need to have your auction guy do a physical check of all HZJs that go through, lots won't have info on the auction sheet and if that info is not there for other bidders, you may be able to get it for a better price.

the X can also dictate a limited slip...

the only real way is a trust worthy agent in Japan that actually inspect the vehicle.

I should add that it's the LAST digit in this string that indicates the lockers: K084 The "4" indicates a locker(s) and if it ends in a "5" then it's the HD limited slop diff. (yes, I did spell it "slop")

ie: K085 = LSD
K084 = lockers
K082 = open

all with the ratio "8" etc...

Have a look at the Land Cruiser FAQ that Rob Mullen wrote years ago and that others on the web still host and try to lay claim to.

I know a guy who bought an 81 with a locker switch - and no lockers! He didn't find out until he go it.

Uh, yeah, there are been a few of those from what I can tell...

I've asked for the VIN on a few trucks in Japan and they keep giving me a number that reads similar to "HZJ77-0004509". What's up with that?:confused: Are they talking about the chassis number?

I've also seen HZJ77 that only have rear lockers while others have both front and rear... it's getting confusing for a newbee!

yep, your a newbie, that IS the vin. you are thinking NA s***. you want the codes off the firewall.

I think you can have one or both on the option list,at least thats what I read in a road test for a 78 series.
Most people get both.

I seen a 100 series incab switch with just the rear marked on it mabey same with all cruisers with the locker option rr or rr ff

That all makes sense because on the HZJ77 that I've looked at they either have nothing or only rear or both front/back. I just wanted to make sure they didn't simply replace the knob with one that had fr/rr...

I'm using the info from this post (thanks!) while dealing with jpn, it's just hard sometimes to get them to go get those codes off the firewall...

i have yet to see teh HD 7* series with just a rear locker. it is either open, limited in the rear or locked both ends. the 100 and the LJ had rear locker option only.

ok, here is what I really meant...;)

front and rear (fr/rr)
or
rear or front and rear. (rr or fr/rr)

It's just funny that they went the distance to put 2 lockers but one doesn't have the rear only option ie. fr/rr...

Thanks again all, I've got my question fully answered!

humm, you ALWAYS have to lock the rear before you can lock the front.
never seen Fr and RR lock at the same time as indicated...

i spose they didnt make a locker for the 100 series ifs front diff
