Gday all,

Ive just bought myself a '97 HZJ75 troopy, petrol/gas. Ive wanted one for years now! He has 241000 k's on it and is in great condition. Ive driven it 3000 k;s and the radiator packed it in, it cost me just over 2 grand (AUD) to ship a new one out. Im now having second thoughts about keeping him, firstly because ive just found out my first kiddy is on the way and money will be a bit tight for a while and secondly because a few people have warned me that im n for a very expensive vehicle to maintain and get parts for. A couple of people have suggested that i sell this one and get a diesel as parts are much easier to come by and cheaper.

Anyone with any feedback or ideas would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt. Your landcruiser is a FZJ75 which indicates its petrol.
The diesel HZJ75 use about 12-14 litres/100klm.
I dont know who sold you the radiator but I bought a very nice aftermarket radiator for $400.
I cant see you saving much on diesel parts over petrol.
The petrol engine is the same as the one in the 80 series.

Where abouts are you?

Hey, thanks for quick reply. Im in Cronulla, on the East Coast. The guys that did my radiator (Engadine radiators) told me it was a rare radiator and they couldn't find any aftermarket ones through all their contacts, so they used Toyota Genuine parts. I was in a bit of a pickle as i was heading away and didnt have time to shop around so i just went with what they told me as ive used them in the past with old cars and they seemed genuine. Obviously i got very ripped off!!!

Do you have a pic? I would like to compare it with a HZJ75 rad

EDIT Dont bother,I can see from the EPC that it is a reverse of a HZJ75.

It might have been possible to weld new outlets onto a HZJ75 radiator. Finding someone who can do that these days is getting harder.

Doesnt running yours on LPG save some fuel money?
Apart from the radiator, most of the engine parts will be the same as a FZJ80 and very easy to get.

The guy at the radiator place looked at welding new outlets on but said it may not work and was probably not worth the risk.

The LPG sstem is working really well so far, although i cant compare it to a Diesel model as ive never owned one. I get roughly 550-600 k's for 100 bucks worth of gas. I dont run it on petrol very often, about an hour a week. Its much more sluggish on petrol, when on LPG it is drives really well.

Can anyone recommend a good 4WD repair centre around the Southern Sydney area?
