Hi, we are talking about a 08/98 troop carrier.

Three of the passenger side rear axel studs have broken (again).

When I noticed this the remaining three nuts were less than finger tight, I have torqued them up to specifications (25 ft-lb, 340kg-cm, 33N-m) but am still not keen on driving it until I actually have the new hub and the six studs intact.

This is the third time I have had this problem, twice on the passengers side and once on the drivers side.

It has been variously diagnosed as bent axels and a damaged diff.

Hubs have been replaced twice(third to go in as soon as I get it)

Both the drivers side and the passengers side axels have bee replace – passengers side because it was (supposedly) bent and the drivers side because the tapered holes were worn / elongated.

The diff has been ‘straightened’.

Repairs have been done with both Toyota and aftermarket axels and hubs.

I am now thinking it is most likely to be a bent (or distorted) axel housing.

A complete axel assembly from a wrecker is about the same price as a bare axel housing from Toyota.

The complete unit from a wrecker might be a bit easier to fit BUT I have no idea how I could check it for distortion.

Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi and welcome to MUD. a good wheel alignment shop could tell you if the rear wheels are perpindicular.
Do you have the correct offset on the rims.
What are you doing when the studs break?

rosco,
Yes the wheels are the correct offset.

Up until now I have been relying on a Toyota dealer to do the repairs.

They will not / can not attempt to remove broken studs so it has had two genuine replacement hus (and associated studs, dowels, cone washers, nuts etc AND two replacement axels (one genuine and one after market). Also new wheel bearings each time.

This time I am replacing the hub, wheel bearings, studs etc with aftermarket stuff.

Then I will do as you suggest and find (if I can) a GOOD wheel alignment shop - a previous four wheel alignment did not report any problems BUT I am not sure they were all that good at what they do.

Regards

its a pritty common problem in the early FF hubs.

This is how i got around the problem

4x 10mm dowels

yep, you MUST have the dowels since they are what takes the torque load (not supporting load, duh). the 6 nuts only lock the axle into the housing and are not design to take the torque being transmitted.

4 is better than 2 / 2 is better than none...FJ45s where notorious for rear FF problems...
