Besides OEM, does anyone have any idea where to get a good substitute for the foam they use in the HVAC ducting (like where two tubes come together, the junction is "sealed" with open cell foam)? Mine isn't looking so hot after 30 years.

Any hardware store. Consider closed cell foam, you'll need to do some testing to get the correct thickness as it doesn't compress as much as the open cell foam, but it holds up better IME.

I used foam for sealing windows and doors from the hardware store when I rebuild my AC Evaporator box. Worked just like the OEM stuff.

You guys might want to put 160* or more to that hardware store foam before installing. A hair dryer or shrink wrap tool will do those temps.

If it takes the temps by all means install it. Most hardware store foam though is not designed for those temps. Automotive heater duct foam is.

Cheers
