Howdy all,

New owner of an '76 Fj40, with a 305 Chevy V8 HO from an 82 Camaro in it... living in Austin TX,trying to learn some wrenching skills, as I have almost none. New to the forums, though I've hit here on Google a lot of times lately. Got a little explainaiton, and then a couple questions, if that's ok

Pulled the gauge cluster out to try to figure out why the lights were not working (it was the switch, sigh). Didn't know enough to unhook battery first, had lots of trouble getting gauge cluster lined up on gauge bezel. Shorted the Coolant temp gauge wire to the dash. Melted the crap out of the heat shrink tubing on the cable for the temp gauge. Melted through the tube for the oil pressure gauge (releasing lots of magic smoke)
Basically the 2 left most gauges on the cluster are kaput.

Both of these look like pretty simple swaps, except for 3 things I don't know. (and probably more that I don't even know enough to ask)

1. I don't know what parts to ask for at the shop, to replace these 2 lines for the two gauges, though an attempt at searching this forum makes me believe this will do to replace the oil pressure tubing Auto Meter 3223 - Auto Meter Tubing and Line Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com
(Am I correct, cut to length and replace into existing fittings?)
(I know there is debate on Nylon vs Copper, for now I'm going to use nylon replacing what's there..)

Can you guys point me toward the right parts to ask for (or order) to get it back to the condition it was in before I tried to "fix" it?

2. Do I need to replace the Coolant sender, It would not surprise me at all that enough amperage to melt insulation running through it might mess it up, but I have no idea. Should I get a new one? I don't even know if it's electrical or mechanical.

3. Being a negative level in wrench-fu, what should I know about replacing these lines/senders to help me to not screw the cruiser up more than I already have?

I clearly know just enough to get myself in trouble , any help is appreciated.

Oh my little brother, who totally hooked me up with the cruiser is Kling-on here...

Thanks,

Caladin-

Welcome.. probably some basic review of automotive electronics would be good. Also, do a search here and/or google for a wiring diagram. The wiring for the instrument cluster should be pretty standard across years. I have a 1971 wiring diagram that I think was originally from Coolerman here on Mud. He'd be a great resource as well.

Are the gauges fried? or just the sensors? Maybe a pic of the wires/tubes that you think got melted would help. The nylon tubing for the oil psi should be pretty standard.

Get a multitester and get familiar with it!

Welcome to the madness... :bang:

Your brother got you interested, but didn't tell you about the local chapter of Cruiserheads? Here is the Clubhouse board:

There are a ton of friendly, and local, folks there that can help you out. green grass hopper is the owner of Land Cruiser Specialists:

If the gauges are fried I can get you some ... Don't forget they are after market ... Only the speedo is stock... I thought you were sayin it just needed rewireing and a tube
