How do I replace / fit air con belt on LJ78 / 2LTE ?

Hi all,

Just a quick post to see if anyone can guide me with steps on how to the above. I'm not much of a mechanic but think I could have a go. I have a genuine new toyota belt (the old one has dissapeared in transit).

Any help from those who have done the above much appreciated.

Cheers, Mark

I don’t have a LJ78 – I have a FJ73 / 3F. I can tell you how I replaced mine which may be of some general help. This is from memory.

The aircon belt in this case is the one at the back with two other belts in front of it. Therefore I had to loosen of the first two belts and weave the aircon belt in between them to position it in place.

1) Firstly I loosened off the alternator by partly undoing two nuts that hold it in place.
2) Then I loosened off the power steering pump.
3) The aircon has a pulley in the middle of the two main pulleys that is used for the tightness adjustment. I loosened this off so that I could get the belt into place. After a bit of weaving and messing around I was able to get the belt over the three aircon pulleys. This was a tight fit and needed a bit of force.
4) Tighten up the aircon belt
5) Re-tighten the power steering belt
6) Re-tighten the alternator belt.

Hope that was right. In total probably took me over an hour to complete the job. I know a lot of the newer motors have a serpantine belt which is presumably a lot easier.

Regards,
David.

You need to remove the plate from underneath, just rear of the rad. Three threaded bolts; one is a bit out of the way, but all can be easily removed with a box end wrench (ratcheting wrenches work well on these). The plate will slide out after you find just the right path; keep at it, it took me 10 minutes of effort to find the right way.

Then you need to loosen the alternator belt, whose tensioner is at the bottom. To loosen you first need to loosen the bolt that looks like it is threaded into the pulley; that lets the tensioner move. Then you just loosen the bolt on the other end of teh tensioner pulley. Once it is out of the way, you can loosen the tensioner on the air conditioner belt (from the top of the engine bay this time) and you are good to go.

First time out this took me an hour. Second time it was 20 minutes.

Kevin, if only it were so easy on mine, as it was complicated by the broken tensioner bearing which I had to shop around at a bearing store to get! I wondered why the darn belt was always squeaking.
