I searched but did not find...

What is the proper method for measuring for belts?

Just wrap a tape measure around the pulleys?

Any tips or tricks to it? Any watchouts?

Thanks,
Phil

I have a wicked long cut belt that I use for measuring custom sizes. It fits closer to where it should than a piece of string or tape measure. Check with adjustment bottomed out and then again at maxed out.

Take measurements to parts store, cuz believe it or not you can't always find belts in every custom size.

I just measured for the belt to fit my new saginaw PS conversion. I tied a string around all the pullies and knotted it at the correct lengths for full compression and full expansion. I then took these loops of rope to an auto store (autozone). They have a belt sizer that they put my loops of rope onto and it gave them the correct belt size for the rope that I had measured. VERY easy!!! Hope this helps.

use an old belt, cut it, and measure the gap/overlap.

This is the method I'm going with. Thanks for all the replies.

Zipties. The biggest longest zipties you can find. String a few together, put 'em around the pullies and pull 'em tight. Take that in to the parts store and say I need a belt that big.
