How Strong are 70 series Front Axles???

Does anyone know how strog are the front axles of a 70 series ? can they handle a 39¨ tire? In South America 70 series from venezuela had Dana 60 semi floater out back and I assume a toyota axel on front? any info will help thanks!

Venezuelan 70's came stock with a D60 rr? Weird, but I know the Merc OM617 come in some S.American Toyotas too.

Myself and a mate run 35/36'' beadlocked tyres without issue, both run ARB air lockers and longfield axels/cv's. Both cars with about 100ish kw at the engine with slightly lower than factory gearing. His 4.56 diff gears mine 2.3 ratio low range case gears.

Thanks all ,I dont know if this helps but it looks like the front axle from an fj80 but narrower , the "shape" on the sides of the pumpkin is square look a like , I dont really know if its standard on all of the 70 series or just South American ones.

Im running standard axles with longfeild cvs. 37" tyres beadlocked and usually down to about 6psi.

2 years of pretty hard wheeling and some 4wd competitions.

I have found that the axle housing itself is the weak link. With all the extra trac i have put on it they just keep bending no matter how much i brace them.

How much extra offset you running and where are they bending?

Is there a difference between the low pinion and high pinion housings?

I run a early low pinion housing with ~1.5'' extra offset each side with cruiser offset 15x8's. The only bracing I have is from the pumpkin to the spring perch.

Later low pinion housings are stronger again they have extra bracing.

I think the square look is due to original bracing , so that means its a later axle right?are the cv´s on this axle like the 80 series ,40 or 60??does Longfields have cv´s for it??

The 70 series high pinion CVs are only very slightly larger than the earlier 40/60/70 series units, and the extra size is just a ring of thicker material on the bell of the CV.

The knuckle kit is more like the 80 series, but uses a smaller ball than the 80 series. Trunion bearings are from the 80 series, inner axles seals are from the 80 series - if I'm remembering the kit contents properly.

The high pinion housings look quite beefy, but durability is really about how you're using your equipment more than anything else.

Thank you all for the answers , this is my config right now, dana 60 semi floater open , front axles high pinion 70 series open also and will leave it that way I modified the axle and converted to 80 series coils and radius arms, 1994 toyota fzj80 manual gear box (that thing is huge!) behind a chevy 350 tbi with headers, toyota fj40 chassis and body, I am plannnig to run 38 or 39¨tires , I am do not have a heavy foot but some times is necesary just a bit , terrain is little bit of rocks , mostly mudy hills and couple of hundred miles of pavement to get to the ¨real deal¨.so the question is Do you think I should modify anything with this axles with my tire set up? (I know that overkill is better) .

Almost imposible to get an electric locked front down here , what upgrades can I make to make it as strong as posible ?
Got 39 because everybody has 33 o 35´s (and allready have one on 33´s )

not the kind that goes with the flow .

Almost imposible to get an electric locked front down here

thought aren't easy but you can get form any FZJ71 " aniversario " rolled otherwise ARB .. do the trick

ummm ARB won't strengthen the housing itself and that is the weak point of the small front center unit.
the electric HOUSING is stronger than the open one.

Woww now that is different! jajajajaja but I assume that hey will be a bit loud on the street nice pictures chushers! if they run open diff and they look very heavy foot ( I am not that Heavy foot) I think it will be fine with 38¨ or 39 ¨on open diffs , are there upgrades just to be safe for this axle , right now is what I have and has to work for me , any junk toyota axles arround here stock are about 1000 Us each , not to cheap being a Toyota country ,

The truck before I took it apart.(I bought it like this and it was a big mistake P.O build it with sh....t and everything was wrong example a bit of rust coming out of the motor!! )
