I just did the math for the overall gear ratio on my 1984 Fj60. UGH! 1.99(T-case)x3.55(tranny)x4.56(new diffs)=32.21

Damn, I always hoped my tranny was 2.2something-or-the-other, but checked the FAQ and the 1984 and earlier 60s were 1.99 Low, right?

I guess its off to the drawing board to see what I can afford to drop that down in the future.

Here is what I found in the Cruiser Tech Trivia:

81-84 FJ60 w/H42 4-speed - 1.990:1
85-87 FJ60 w/H42 4-speed - 2.276:1

I always assumed Ih ad the 2.276 but after seeing this...? Mine is was built in Nov. 83 so it is definetly in the 81-84 range. Is there an easy way to check, did Toyota stamp their T-cases to know which one was wich?

Looking at the Specter catalog...
070-24S TRANSFER LO SPEED OUTPUT GEAR- 8/80-4/86
070-24T TRANSFER LO SPEED OUTPUT GEAR 4/86-8/87

I would say you have 2.28 and the FAQ is wrong, at least for US models. Most foreign cases seem to be 1.9 even up to the late 80's on 5spds.

LOL, I hope so, I have always been amazed Toyota didnt drop lower gears in the Cruisers T-case, but I guess they had their reasoning.

Thanks!
