How much MPG do you gain with new 02 sensors?

Any at all? My dads considering selling my 80 due to me getting about 10 city driving and im not even hard on the skinny pedal. I have a 2.5 lift and a roof on the roof rack thats coming down very soon. 33 BFG A/T's wouldnt hurt me that much would it? I hear about you guys getting like 16 sometimes and I would love that. But ya either way my 02 sensors are blown and if I spent the money for new ones what do they run and would it increase my gas mileage enough?
 
I replaced both o2 sensors (thanks for the great price Cdan) and my mileage went from about 11 to 15. However I knew they were going bad because the check engine light would stay on when it got cold and the OBD was giving the code for the rear o2 sensor. How long have you been running the current o2 sensors? Mine had about 97K miles on them.
 
haha way more than that. 136k miles and the code came up at about 115k miles. What did you pay for yours? Obviously you got them from cdan.
 
Not to burst your bubble but on my '94 my new O2s showed no gain in gas mileage. Originals were on for 130K.
 
I replaced my O2 sensors with 110k miles on them, and I believe I lost a MPG or two. I get about 11mpg city, 33s, OME 2.5. What is your tire pressure?
 
No noticeable improvement from my OEM O2 sensors - done as PM, with no code. You should *always* take MPG discussion with a grain of salt. Expect to get 13 city and 15 hwy with a stock rig, adjust from there as you become non-stock.

People that claim more are often one-off situations where the likelihood of error is very high. People that claim significantly higher than 15 on a regular basis must be (1) driving most of that on the highway and (2) at very reasonable speeds (e.g. 65 or less). Without data over many tanks of gas, don't believe the anecdotes.

I do think 33's would hurt you driving mostly city. All the way down to 10?? Dunno.
 
O2 sensor change no improvement in mileage.

Changed both last month. No improvement in mileage. Still getting 10. I'm able to hold 70 on the interstate better going up the long hills though, it stopped dropping down to second, and only droppes to drive now.

Mostly commute driving back and forth to work. I did air up from 38 to 44 this morning, with the tank fill up. (58.00:crybaby: ) to see if I was possible running the toyo's too soft.
 
As far as selling the cruiser because of poor mileage, one only has to calculate the difference in MPG vs. price per gallon vs. miles driven per week to see that it's usually cheaper to keep the paid off vehicle, than go get another one, or second car to increase mileage from 10 to say 20.

For example I drive about 1000 miles per month, that's 270.00 (2.70 gal) a month for gas, if I were to purchase I car that gets 20 mpg, I would burn 135.00 a month for gas. I doubt I could find a appropriate replacement vehicle to my cruiser to improve my mileage for monthly payments of 135.00 a month. I could probably find some POS that I can pay cash for and not have to finance it. If someone else is paying for the vehicle, then that's a different story.

A side note, it drives me crazy at my office, when my young co-workers, roll upside down payoff's into their new car financing. One guy has rolled 4 upside down cars now, he's was approved for 96 month financing with his 3 yr old f-250. What are people thinking???
 
Have noticed my '88 FJ62 with 247,000 miles getting worse mileage. Tuneup, tires inflated, no junk in the trunk, synthetic oil, no improvement. Read all about the 02 sensor issues. Used the paper clip jump to check the ECU/CEl issues, all read normal. Took the plunge and replaced both 02 sensors. The outboard one only had one stud, other one had rusted off. The sensor has being held on loosely by only the other one and still not CEL light!!! Inboard one was fine. After replacement have gotten 16-17 mpg but mostly highway driving under 65 mph.

Same here :( I am getting 8.5-9 with the ac on 80% of the time and an agressive foot. (damn that foot) :)
 
I am assuming you corrected your MPG based on your larger than stock tire size?

(Miles driven *1.06)/gallons

I think 6% is correct for 33's

I concur, new car payments will definitely cost more than the fuel difference cost. Not to mention the loss of a very unique vehicle.:grinpimp:

What would you be replacing it with?
 
I've also been thinking of a smaller car, teeny tiny in fact, if only because I can't find a better way to save fuel than by staying home or using public transport, neither one of which is appealing.

Unfortunately, I agree with WFD175 and 80 Cruiser Rod that another car is just even more expense and really, it's also difficult to drive 2 cars when you're only one driver. It's an illusion that a small car will save me money. My trips would cost less, but the conversion and aquisition expenses would be a considerable expenditure. That amount would take a while to recover, or a lot of driving to justify. Even if I factor in the savings of driving smaller, and therefore cheaper, tires the amount is still a struggle. It's an even greater struggle when I consider the lost joy of driving a teeny tiny as against driving my precious 80.

For me, it's easier and cheaper to drive less.

Surprisingly, I did see an improvement with new O2 sensors at 158k miles. I'd say, overall a 2-3 mpg improvement. This is on a '96 that was loaded down for a camping trip. I'm running M/T tires.
 
Well I think im goign to keep and eye on it for the next 2-3 tanks and see what I average out at and making slight modifications after the first tank such as tire off the roof rack and making sure my tires are at the right PSI.

There you go.

While you are at it grease your u-joints, check your brake pads and ebrake. Try to do stuff now that doesn't cost anything and will have a more immediate effect ;)
 
I no longer have my invoice but the o2 sensors were about $115 each. The mileage improvement (11 to 15) was highway miles. I don't keep track of in town driving mileage as it is not good for my mental health. Also, I don't make a habit of smelling exhaust fumes but you can't help it when you are sitting in traffic with the windows down with a tail wind. Anyway my exhaust smelled pretty rich before I changed out the sensors, I don't notice that any more.
 
Tire pressure and cruising mph is what make the biggest difference in mpg for me. If I can keep it under an indicated 70mph I get 1-2mph better (14-15mpg highway). If I drive at 70+ I get mid 13's and that is still accellerating like Ms. Daisy. 152K miles on the original O2's.

Windy conditions kill my fuel economy a little as well. All that I know is that I pay $50/month for full coverage insurance and have no car payments. I'll eat the $65/tank fillup to have that.

I get about 280miles/tank. 87 octane here in CA is currently $3.25 at the cheapest station I can find.

Time to finish my LS7/FD which should get low/mid 20's mpg on the highway going 80mph in 6th (.50 overdrive gear with 3:90's and 26" tall tire). 575rwhp :bounce:
