How much do you like/enjoy/use the tailgate? (1 Viewer)

I love the tailgate, but I don't get this argument. I did this with my 4Runner and the coverage area is even bigger.

I think the difference is if the rig is loaded without a tailgate you have to rearrange gear to have a place to sit. With the tailgate.. you don’t.

The rain argument only really applies when comparing to the GX with its swing out door.

having the barn door on my FJ and the split gate on the 200, split everytime

from changing diapers on little one, snack time, sitting down myself, having a flat surface to work on or organize things... love it

A side note. My prior vehicle was a Land Rover LR4. All my prior vehicles had had full lift gates. I loved the split tailgate feature on the LR4 which became a "must have" for whatever vehicle I purchased next. That was a significant reason for me going with the Land Cruiser vs the GX. Though I won't go back to Land Rover due to long term reliability and maintenance cost issues I also would never purchase their new "Discovery". To do a split tailgate on the new Discovery they couldn't make up their minds. So they have a full size lift gate and then a bench that folds down. Now that they have announced their new Defender it is going to have a side-opening rear door. The reasons they give are the need to mount the full size, even over-sized spare on the rear rather than underneath for the sake of clearance. And also they want to keep some of the legacy feel of the original Defender. But I did love that LR4. I just didn't trust it long term.

Also the little storage compartments in the tailgate are nice. One holds the oem toolkit (assume LC is same as LX) and in the other I have the manual and a first aid kit. Getting the manual out of the glove box opens it up quite a bit. Since I have the cool box instead of console every little bit helps.

There are also some pretty interesting, tailgate-required storage options.

It definitely creates a locked space that is far beyond just reasonable.
Covering and interior were added by the user.

So apparently I've been out of the loop... are these available to buy or was this a custom one-off. I don't see them on their website.

Lockable tailgate Compartmentsetup is av available 100% from @TRAIL TAILOR .

That particular Internalinternal set up is my own fiddling.

Personally I love the split tailgate. I live in a NYC so I can still open it in tight parking spaces. It provides a little shelter from the sun and weather. A great little bench with audio right above you. A little storage space in it as well.

I will have 12 more tailgate lids being cut late next week and headed to powder. Andrea is working on a website link and hopefully will be on the website by this weekend.

If anyone wants one please PM me or email me at jason@trail-tailor.com and I'll get you taken care of.

The tailgate is also good for holding ramps so heavier objects can be wheeled or slid up into place. My generator came out of storage last year and needed transport.... 270lbs rolled right up and in, a one man operation.

What kind of ramp do you use? I need to transport a very heavy generator myself shortly. Pictures would be great if you have any

I use some old school 2 x 8" boards with a ramp kit on the ends, had em' for 30 years. These days, there are a multitude of alloy and steel folding ramps that are easier to stow, prices vary. My generator is a Honda EM7000IS.

Yeah, Land Cruisers dont stand out at all. As for cost of vehicle, i just got back from a month driving around Mexico (to the end of Baja, across via the ferry then to Puerto Vallarta and points south). As usual, Ford F150s, Raptors, and Suburbans are everywhere. Just because something costs money doesn’t mean you’ll get noticed. A Lexus will, as will a G Wagen or a Range Rover. Unfortunately you are just asking for trouble anywhere in Mexico or Central America driving one of those.
Hey Stonepa - It's not that I didn't heed your comment, but to confirm what you have said. Just listened to a podcast with guest Ed Calderon a security specialist and combative instructor. He said (as you did) it is getting worse down there. He also pointed out that the banditos love taking any 4*4 from any gringo (they may kill you but will likely let you walk) - the newer the rig for them the better! I'm proper worried now...

It's been bad for a while. I grew up in south Texas, new Ford F-250/350 are prime targets for the cartels as well.
