If a 60/62 has high 200ks in miles is that in and of itself a concern? obviously yeah, but if the motor and tranny have been rebuilt a year ago and if i were to upgrade suspension is there a general concern that remains? obviously stuff will have more miles than if lower mileage on chasis but what would i be concerned with in general given the above? sorry bout the likely dumb question.

thx in advance

Most people on this forum have 200k plus. I have driven an FJ60 with 334k all original miles that ran like a top.

Miles are irrelevant, what you have to worry about is rust. IMO, a rust-free cruiser with 500k is still a better bet than a rusted cruiser with 120k.

:edit: another thing to keep in mind is that a 30 year old car with low miles is more likely to have original 30 year old parts on it, which are more likely to fail. If it's been driven regularly over the years and the owner kept up with the maintenance, most everything will have been replaced at one point or another.

that is a fantastic reply and makes a lot of sense...and validates what my simple mind was thinking. thanks again

Yeah like said above I got to talking cruisers w/a guy at the bar a few years back, he had an 85 or 87 can't recall which w/ 1/2 a mill. Miles on original drive train. That said I live in low land Ca. Not close enough to the coast to worry and not enough elevation to = salt so no rust. And old suspension isn't necessarily a bad thing specially if u like the low rider look or intend to go SOA.

We had to retire an FJ40 frame about 5 years ago. It had over 800,000 miles on it. Way over. Might have been as much as a mil. I still remember asking years ago how many miles were on the rig... the answer off the top of the owners head was "about 300,000 since the last rebuild of this engine in it now." For the previous 3 years it had come into the shop after wheeling/hunting season and I wedled up cracks. The last time in I counted over a dozen and a couple that were 90% of the way around the frame member. At that point I told the owner (Close friend) that we needed to take a different approach.

We would up pulling everything off the rig and transferred the drivetrain, suspension, steering... everything but the frame and tub/cowling over to a perfect condition frame and tub/cowling that I had on hand.

Not sure how many miles are on this frame or how man it will have before it dies... but it came out of the factory in '68... so it is no youngster.

Mark...
