How loud is your engine? (1 Viewer)

LOL! I had to do that just today! :) I get a lot of gear noise but not a whole lot of engine noise unless the rpm's are way up. To me thats just part of the experience.

I do it every time as well...with the exhaust exiting after the rear drivers side tire it kills the mickey mouse intercom at the drive throughs....As if they worked great to begin with....lol

My F1 was so loud I couldn't talk to my wife when we were going faster than 1 mph. :). Exhaust manifold gasket, valve adjustment, gearbox replacement, heat insultation with a stuff that they sell around here (very thick rubber foam with aluminum foil) and now we can talk up to 40 - 50 mph on a flat road, uphill less than 20mph.

My advise, do what others have done but never forget you are riding a rugged vehicle that was desinged in the 50s for military and off road purposes.

My 350 and gear train noise drown out the tire noise, and my tires are supposed to be noisy. The noise is loud enough that I haven't bothered to install a stereo.

An engine with the older style fixed radiator fan is A LOT louder at rpm than one equipped with a newer clutch style fan. Just a thought.

i can't hear a dam thing above 40 mph , once i hit 4th gear it whines like a sob , im pretty sure i have a bad input or out up bearing in the 420 since it basically only does it in 4th . rebuild or a replacement is in the works .

after that if its still wining i will fix the small amount of rust underneath the tub then bed line underneath and the floor the floor dynamat it and then bed line over top of the dynamat , i have done this before in other vehicles it works awesome .

plus i get a smoking deal on dynamat

I had a friend that said they can here me come home after work at 3am with the noise from my tire's let alone the motor...
:D:D

noise

its louder than an F15, 50 foot off the deck, full afterburner, running like a scalded dog!

But it's not too bad:eek::lol::lol:

Well, I guess I'm good to go then :) haha.. maybe just a tad paranoid :)

I read up on the dynamat stuff. I remember seeing stick-on asphault pads some time ago. There were two versions: one for interior and one that mounted on the underside. It looked real similar to the stock sound dampner mounted on the drivers side floor and tunnel of my '77.

Anyone know of a source for this, or similar material? Or, how does the dynamat compare? Seems to me the asphault stuff would be more durable.

I wonder if some of this stuff could be applied to the engine side of the firewall???

How do you like that foam with the foil? My rig is loud, but for good reasons...

My 2f is fairly quiet until you stomp on it, the fan (plastic w/clutch) does make a fair amount of noise. Exhaust note is very quiet with the oem muffler. The engine is louder than the exhaust. However the tires and gears overwhelm any engine noise after about 25mph. No carpet and no hardtop also makes these trucks rattle and hum like a tin can.

...

I will be willing to bet its your fan clutch. I have had several older cars and when you hear a loud wind like sound from the engine all the time, which is much louder at higher rpms... its the fan clutch. My 81 40 was having the same problem, went to Advanced auto and bought one off the shelf for Toyota LC and after an hour of work it was fixed. The fan clutch is made to slow the fan at higher rpms and when the engine is cool so you don't hear that loud sound.

Just open your hood and try to figure the where the sound is from. If its a sucking sound look for carb leaks... loud muffler sound (like a motorcycle) look at headers/exhaust manifold. If its a constant wind like sound... like a huge fan running at HIGH, its your fan clutch that stuck on.

My 2 cents
