I doing a rebuild on a front axle, I took it apart without saving the shims and need to know the thickness now that I am putting it together again. I also need to know the thickness of the shims on the bottom one (dont know what its called)...

Hopefully someone can help...

There really isn't a standard thickness.
The FSM gives a long detailed method to determine the proper thickness for each.
It's rather complicated and requires some special service tools.
Most people put the same one's back on in the same places.

Hopefully someone has their axle apart and can give you a reference point to start with.

Or maybe one of the companies that sells knuckle rebuild kits might know (AllPro, Marlin, Trail-Gear, etc)

Theres a quick link. You need to asemble the nuckel without the rubber/felt wipers then check the drag with a scale after torquing the nuts to the proper Ft/LB. You will need a spring scale to do the setup propertly. It will also take a coupel of trys.
have fun!
:D

I just did a knuckle replacement on my ’68 FJ40, I know you have a 4Runner…

I used the factory centering tool to do the alignment with. One the first side I did the measurements four times, three of the four I got the same numbers, 1.5mm on the lower bearing shims, for aligning the axle tube with the spindle, and 1.66mm on the upper bearings, for the preload. When all put together with factory torque on the knuckle studs, the preload took 6lbs of pull.
The second side I took two measurements and came up with the same numbers.

Hope yours is as easy.

Thanx guys! I`ll try to get this right! Hopefully I will be able to fish out the shims from my oil pan... I also have a loose front-axle to get some pointers from...

Note to self, don't throw away stuff!!!

Wise words...... :D

And luckily I a bit lazy on the cleaning side of things... Found my oil pan from when I took the front axle apart and found all the shims, then just made the piles and reconstructed the shims. Then I just picked out new ones from my rebuild kit....

I hope someone learns from my mistake, even though it didnt really bite me in my ass...
