How in the H*** do you get the *&%^(*&^ gas tank to drop/

I've been under the rig for 2 hours, prying etc, it's like they took agas tank, ..and built atruck around it.....what am i missing?

You are underneath the truck trying to get the tank out? That calls for a WTF!
The tank is under the passenger seat INSIDE the cab. depending on what year you may need to remove the cover after you remove the seat and there are two straps holding the tank in. It is a 1 banana job at best.

LOL! check out the year! My tank is under the truck....and runs the width of the truck, between both frame rails, with a fat part on the driver's side....and athin part that extends to the fill neck on the passenger side...

unless...a steel FJ/BJ has access panels from above...that my F/G tub doesn't have,...

there is NO WAY it goes up, no way.....

On my 79 FJ40, unbolt 2 straps, disconnect a ****load of emission, return and filler hoses on top (helped that my floor was rusted out) and away she goes.

but away she went down? right?

I have a cross member tube that I'm hung up on, maybe I have a larger tank? my tank is at the frame rail on the driver's side, and above the frame rail on the passenger, I tried to drop it on the driver's side, then slide it over and down, but it's bound up....

You are right, your tank must be slightly larger than mine. My straps were rusted, but the po had installed a new tank. I was able to rip and tear the rusty parts.....mine worked out fairly easily as I remember....seems I dropped the fat side first.

Cool. I didn't catch that. Good luck BTW

%$#&^% I hope my tub isn't the issue....it's the sender i'm trying to replace...

Sorry, yes, down...its been a year, wish I could remember better. Certainly were not any special handshakes or tools required....mine was still half full....thought it would be easier to drain after I got it out. There is an inspection plate in the bed that allows access to the sending unit, maybe a peek thru there would help.

Bingo. Remove your heater and you can get to it better.

Ummm no I can't....F/G tub, no access panel....

Well not yet anyway....I'm thinking of getting my skill saw : )

If I remember, the tank sits pretty close. Maybe check out the SOR catalog for a detail of the inspection cover location.

I do not have the panel.....so the tank has to come down...lol, it would have to come down somehow if I was replacing the tank, so there must be a way....

driving me nuts fighting with it

Zeke,

It's been a while, but as I remember for a stock 1982 FJ45 pickup, after dropping the driveshaft and straps: sliding, tilting, and rotating 90 degrees to the left and/or right, got the tank down and out--a real PITA coming out, but easier returning it if you jot down your exit moves.

Because it's not an every day occurrence, hard-pressed to remember the exact steps--sorry.

I had to jack up the back end on the last one I did (stock tub)... don't remember exactly but I think the droop in the springs gave me the extra inch or so I needed to just barely get it to wiggle out. There's not much if any extra room... I do remember it took some jacking around to get it to drop, but it did.

Hope the aluminum tub isn't your culprit...

was hoping to get away without all the removal, but i guess it's the way to do it...tomorrow I'll pull the rear driveshaft, and jack the truck up to gain more clearance...

a fresh start might put me in a better frame of mind....

When I ripped out the awful PO carpet, the access panel appeared. Below is a picture of the panel post liner coverage:

Keep prying...

On my '81 I removed both straps and protection/skid plate and a **** load of emmissions ****. Also unbolt filler neck from inside of tub.

When it dropped, it came all at once! Fairly heavy.

BTW....my whote tub was off the mounts at the time. :D

Keep trying.
