hey guys - I finally got my gauges in - and m,y water temp is reading 120 degrees celcius....i figure thats a bit hot - and am wondering how hot all you others out there are?....

anyone out there know what the temp is 'supposed' to be?

120 Celcius....248 Fahrenheit

Your engine will not be long for this world at those temps.

Well-

Mr. Toyota offers two thermostats for the F/2F engine over here in the USA:

One is 82 degrees Celcius/179.6 degrees Fahrenheit

The other is 88 degrees Celcius/190.4 degrees Fahrenheit

Please go into detail about the condition of your truck/engine/cooling system/fan/fan shroud/any maintenance that has been performed recently to these items listed.

These things run at 170-190 degrees F whether you are in Death Valley in July, or North Dakota in January.

That is, if the cooling system is working properly...

I have had 1 F engine and 2 2F engines over the years, and that is where they run.

so what next?

thanks for the numbers there team, so whats the next step?

i flushed the whole cooling system just a week or so ago, and ran the engine to pump through it, and the water pump seemed to be pushing appropriate amounts, leading me to believe that water is cycling...i also put in the new temp sender which came with the gauges ['dolphin' - same guys who make the EZ wiring kit] and i am inclined to think that either the sender or the gauge is malfunctioning - as i went for a 45 minute drive, and it was reading 120 celcius after only about 15 minutes...and after stopping and turning it off, i figured i would have heard some boiling or something - as its 20 degrees above boiling...but i heard nothing...anyone have any ideas of how i could test the water temp using something else? lets say i got an appropriate thermometer, where could i stick it to get an accurate reading?

any other thougths to remedie this little issue?

Infrared thermometer on the top heater hose will give an indication.

180 def F is 82 deg C, hose should be about that, perhaps show a few deg lower.

My Wolf V500 ECU shows 88C or 190.4F on my 2F measured at the thermostat.

Gauge is about a 1/4

mine runs at 160F at 110kph all day, that is off an auto meter mechanical gauge, you might need a new thermostat if you dont already have one, hope you sort it as nothing annoys ya more than an overheating engine

I agree with you that the guage is either malfunctioning or not calibrated properly.

You would know if you engine were running that hot by boiling noises, smoke, and general inflammation.

Good Luck

Can you put your sender in a pot of boiling water? Maybe heat it with a torch near you engine?

more heat issues...

so my previous problem was related to a clogged up engine - on top of bad compression...so, i replaced it.

it was running great at about 80 Celsius very consistently, [having the new clean engine in, new water pump, new hoses new pretty much everything - but no thermostat]...until recently...

in its most recent time spend in the workshop, i had a new muffler put on [previously i was using a pre-muffler, straight through free flow] - was a little too loud - so i swapped in a *gasp* land rover discovery muffler with a lot more resistance...but much more appreciated by the wife...i also put in a pertronix ignition kit, and as there was no thermostat - i threw in a new one for good measure [not that they are necessary here with it never being cold]...i had also just fitted my new aux petrol tank, water tank and quite heavy roof rack...adding about 150kg to the mix in total...then i took her out for a spin - and was quite surprised to see her running at a fairly consistent 95-98ish celcius...i read in haynes that the thermostat only fully opens at 95 celcius...but im wodering if it might be the muffler causing more resistence than it should - causing more heat to build up...or could it just be the thermostat?...hmmmmmm...i want my 80 degrees back!!!!!

weather here is around 30 - not that it should make a difference....

one thing i should mention is that while i was enjoying the 80 degree situation, i went for a little tour through the desert [heavy soft sand, tires at 15psi], and the heat went up to about 105 celcius...which is normal apparently...and then i just came back from another drive with the 97ish degree situation - and it didn't alter much at all in the sand...hmmmm...[scatching head]

give me your thoughts!!!!!

*** i should mention that although i secretly want this problem to be the quite muffler - i figure that if it was restricting flow so much as to cause over heating issues - that it would also cause some fairly noticeable lack of power...which it isn't....

Did you change your radiator as well? If your old engine was "plugged" the radiator would be as well.

nah...the old engine was clogged due to slightly salinated well water being used as coolant for the engines entire life - and yes, the rad was clogged, and thus was of course replaced with the new engine...the problem is that i had been running 80 degree temps...before adding the higher resistance muffler, and installing the thermostat...im just asking which of those two would be the likely culprit in the current 97ish temps...

...i should also mention that when i installed the thermostat that i DID NOT install the thermostat gasket - only the housing seal....but i figure that should only result in more coolant leaking around the thermostat into the radiator - thus cooling more...not less...perhaps i should just take out the thermostat and take a drive....would be easier than cutting the muffler off....

hi ian

yep, have a go without the stat..lots of folks here do that in the summer. also i hope your new rad is a 4-core.
