How does everyone have their auxiliary driving lamps hooked up?

I have always had my offroad lights hooked up to a separate switch...
I use them on the highway on long road trips quite often, always shutting them right off at any hint of oncoming traffic.
DO they need to come on with the highbeams as it says below? (do they have to be wired in that way?)
Or can I leave them on their own switch? (which I prefer)

I have the ultimate harness from the wagongear website and Erik said he could modify it so that the auxiliary lights come on with the highbeams and have a master switch to keep the auxiliary lights off if I want when the highbeams are on.
Anyways I was hoping to just keep it simple and run a switch for the auxiliary lights and be done with it (otherwise I have to mail the harness back to him).

What does everyone else do?

Auxiliary driving lamps

4.09 (1) A motor vehicle may be equipped with 2 auxiliary driving lamps, mounted on the front of the vehicle at a height of not less than 40 cm and not more than 1.06 m, that are capable of displaying onlywhite light.

(2) An auxiliary driving lamp must be directed so that the high intensity portion of the beam is, at a distance of 8 m from the lamp, at least 12 cm below the height of the lamp and, at a distance of 25 m from the lamp, not higher than 1.06 m from the road surface.

(3) An auxiliary driving lamp must operate so that it is illuminated only when the upper beam of a multiple beam headlamp is illuminated.

By law, they should be connected to a relay off your high beams switch.
Mine are all individually switched......ooops.......oh well.

Oh yea, and rear flood lamps are supposed to be connected to your reverse lights too, so you can't accidentally blind the dumb a$$ tail gating you.

They do come in handy when dumb a$$ takes it one step further and high beams you from behind

I hook mine up to the high beams, it just makes things easier when oncoming traffic is spotted I just turn off the high's and both go out. No fumbling to kill the high's and the driving lights. I can not see a situation where I would want to use the driving lights with out the high beams so its a non issue for me.

How about during a surveillance op where you don't want to turn the key to the on position?

What difference would that make? No key on s*** loads of light, key on....s*** loads of light.

Ok OK in the event of surveillance Op's I will be at a disadvantage.....

I can't STAND it when people tailgate, one of my thoughts was to hook up a sensor to automatically turn on my rear area lights when someone gets within say 10 feet or so. I would claim it's an area light sensor for camping. But I guess that would probably net me a ticket if I get tailgated by a cop, which has happened.

I think a switched light would make much more sense and also prevent any unwanted attention.

you're right! because my truck is so inconspicuous and invisible to begin with

if I was in a Mad Max movie :D

Oh ye of little surveillance experience. I have watched a lot of Magnum PI, Simon and Simon, Rockford Files, Fall Guy...oh no he was a bounty hunter. Obviously an obvious vehicle is best because no one would think an obvious vehicle would be used...obviously.
