I have the top off my 40 and it seems like I smell exuast all the time. Is this normal? It takes the fun out of driving it and kills my lungs. I figured you might smell exaust here and there but not 80 90% of the time???

yOU WIL GEET DRIAN BAMAGE. Sorry, If you exhust goes out the back have it moved to exit out the side. The best way to find an exust leak is with a sniffer ( any shop doing emission test will have one). You can also starte it cool and run your hand around the pipe real quick to feel for it.

Check where your exhaust exits, if the tip is aimed at a body panel. or is tucked up into the tub, then it will permeate in the area, and you will constantly smell it. ALso, climb under your truck, and follow the exhaust from the manifold/headers back, looking for misaligned tubes, or even some sooty black buildup. If you find some soot collecting anywhere on the exhaust, then you have a leak.

I know that the P.O.(my father) had a new exaust put on it..he wanted to put new headers, but they couldn't find any that were Cali smog legal..so the pipes are new from the headers back...I'm pretty sure they pulled the headers off and ended up putting them back on...My thought is that some how the gaskets didn't reseal right or some thing

I feel sleepy..what was the question again? Where did I put my keys..hehe.

The guys at work know when I drive the 45 to work because I come in smelling like exhaust. Fix the leaks, reapair holes in your floorboard and firewall, and tune up your engine is the best way to fix her. Are you smelling exhaust or the fuel tank?

Oh and make sure your exhaust tip exits the truck, not ends under the body somewhere.

That should fix any exhaust leaks. I have the same problem. I have all of the above on order. I will be taking pictures of the install next week when the parts arrive.

It's def. exhuast...I'm not sure about the backfire..I thought I had one, but couldn't tell because my earbuds were on so loud...It def. makes a funny rumbly sound when I let off the gas and take it out of gear...kind of a blom blom blom..The exhaust exits the rear passenger side with the tip facing down..

I just found a leak between my intake and exhast manifold. Started it cold and felt around. It was very easy to find. Your post motivated me to find where that smell was coming from. :)
