2UZ, I have the transmission off, what next?

mark

I have an FSM and it simply says "remove the torque converter"... does it just pull off? Mine is not sliding off and I don't want to force it if there is something else I'm supposed to be doing first....

Subscribed...need to do my rear main seal and want to check the AT input side while its out. Like you the FSM is less than helpful for this including seal swap (assuming its possible). I haven't searched the 80 section but would think, if your 100 is a '98-'02, it might be the same since they're both A343F ATs.

Maybe no help to you..... but I'm going to guess it's bolted to the flexplate and does not just slide out... ?

After you're all buttoned back up, I'd love to know the reason for the tear down and what could have made it easier for next time. Good to know info.

Got it... yes, must unbolt the flywhell (flexplate) from the engine THEN the torque converter from that... DOH!

I am doing this because I am installing an H151 manual 5 speed transmission to the 2UZ as part of my engine/transmission swap into a 1966 FJ45LV....

Awesome...... and Awesome'r!

Another question..... did you have to spin the torque converter to get it to unseat from BOTH sets of splines? .... or did it just slide off the trans once separated?

taking them off, they usually just slide pretty easily. Try spinning one way while pulling, then go the other direction. support the bottom a little to try and get it neutrally balanced.

edit: just saw I was replying to a hypothetical question

Ok... seems to be 2 different conversations going on here.

When I pulled the auto transmission off of the engine the flywheel and torque converter stayed with the engine. I BELIEVE this is because the flywheel is bolted to the back of the engine (crankshaft?)...

I have not yet unbolted the flywheel to remove it from the engine to then gain access to the bolts hold it to the torque converter...

Is this an A750F? (It is supposed to be from a 2004 LX470)... and what is the transfer case model...?

Thanks for pics. I see your dilemma. Having only pulled manual trans, I'm not of much help. However I would have thought that the TC would have come off with the trans? On the installation diagram AT-33 they show it on the trans side. Diagram on AT-2 makes it look like it's all one assembly?

Slightly OT, how does the fluid exchange in TC? Through the shaft?

The TC is bolted to the flexplate. Once you unbolt that, the TC should slide off. Getting to those bolts is probably interesting.....from the engine side of the flexplate I would guess....there are probably access holes and you'll need to spin the crank to line the bolts up with the holes.

THis will be fun with it on the ground like it is....

Didn't get a chance to try yet... sorry...

You probably realized by now, but:
The standard method is to unbolt the TC from the flywheel BEFORE you separate the engine and the gearbox. That way the TC stays with the transmission. (And you get much less mess on the floor)
