2006 Tacoma TRD Sport. I want to disable the airbag for off roading. Specifically for letting my son drive. I can't find anywhere that confirms or deny air bags switching off in low 4wd.

I think the newer Tacomas added a switch to disable the side curtain bags, and most have a manual switch or sensor to disable the passenger air bag, but I don't think there's anything for the driver air bag. What about pulling a fuse?

I can't find a fuse labeled air bag. Perhaps I need more sleep.... Tempted to just pull the bag when I go off-roading, it's not that hard to do, but then from the house to the trail I'm running with a modified airbag which I believe is a no no. I swear I read a test somewhere sometime where they said this manufacture does disable them and this other one doesn't and they had one pop on them and blah blah blah but can't remember anything specific to this truck.

There is no Air Bag fuse, power is fed directly from the IGN fuse. This truck does not have Roll Sensing Curtain Air Bags, so no switch is needed for those. The switch in the dash that takes a key is for the front passenger seat, it's set to Auto if bucket seats, or Off with bench seat. With all the trouble GM is in right now, disabling air bags is something manufacturers are going to really shy away from.

I would say the easiest way to disable the driver's inflator specifically would be to pull the 2 steering column cover screws, drop the lower cover, and disconnect the yellow connector to the spiral cable. The light will come on, but will go out once it's plugged back in and the ignition cycled.
