I was doing some PM and was draining the gear oil from the transfer case when I noticed red sealant between the body halves and rear housing. It didn't look factory to me, as I thought FIPG was black. It got me to thinking that maybe my VC had been removed by a PO. How can I tell if my VC is gone as opposed to just working properly, without tearing it apart to see if its in there?

Put the transfer in neutral. Lift up any tire and rotate it by hand. Without the VC, the tire will spin easily (just a small drag from the differential and the driveshaft turning) . With a working VC, the tire will still rotate but you will feel significant resistance.

But on a side note, transmission/differential/transfer factory FIPG is, in fact, red.

...what he said.

....I think...you can raise one front tire off the ground, if it moves freely no VC, if there is resistance then it's working and if you're not able to turn it then it's seized.

I think from what I've read somewhere else here.

Edit ...looks like others have responded.
