Hours to oil change?

Hello all,

My speedometer is acting weird on my 40. It is no longer reliable. I am thinking on installing an hour meter.

Do you guys have any idea what should be the number of hours between oil changes for a 3b? If this is of any help, I run about 50% highway, 35% city and 15% offroad.

Divide the miles between oil changes by your average speed = hours
eg 8000klms / 70kph = 114 hours

100 hrs is the normal on aircraft. But they operate at a constant power.

I would say anywhere between 75 and 100.....or what ever your comfortable with.

Changing oil on hrs is a much better way than kms. Cause stop and go driving is really hard on the oil, all the idling and such, but doesn't really record against the kms towards oil changes.

Install the hr. meter, keep track of your hours. Then send a sample away for testing at 70, 90, and 110hrs. Testing the oil is the best method to gauge it's quality and you will be surprised at the longevity of a good quality oil. Most heavy duty truck shops will either provide the service or be able to point you in the right direction at least.

In the 2H and 1HD-T owner manual claim to change it each 5,000 Km or 6 months.

I will do an oil change tomorrow and install the hourmeter. The testing of the oil sounds great, however, I live outside the US (central america) so oil labs are out of the question as far as I know. I have been using Delo 400 15w 40 even though the coldest it has ever gotten around is 50 farenheit (10 celsius) in the morning. It usually is just 62 farenheit in the mornings and up to mid 90s at noon.

Do you guys think I should go with straight 40 grade Delo 400? Is there any benefit to a change like this?

Why not just repair your speedometer?

If it's a cable, it's easy. If the Odometer is not right, as in the numbers are not turning over properly, then it's old dried out grease and dirt that usually causes it. Take the thing apart and clean all the cogs and put it back together with a small dab of silicone assembly lube here and there and it should work beaytifully once again.

Anybody have an hourmeter and a working speedo? It'd be interesting to know what 6000km converts to in hours of real world use. I was going to guess 100 hours.

I deal with excavators,bobcats(skidsteers) 100-300Cfm air compressors as well as small single cylinder air cooled diesel and gas engines at work.The manuals for the larger engines indicate 5000km or 100 hrs, some even 250 hrs depending on the sump size for oil changes,have been following this maintainance schedule for over 17 years with some of the same equipment and have never had a oil related issue.
The Delo oil you are using is one of the best conventional oils on the market,so 100 hrs is fine,one of the fellows at work installed a hour meter on his truck and with regular(stop,go,city,highway etc) driving 100hrs was very close to 5000kms..

For a diesel engine you can buy either a analog hour meter,runs off 12-24 volts,you wire into a ignition on source or I have seen one that works off the injector line pulse,might be able to find it at a lawn and garden repair center,I recall sold by Briggs and Stratton,but was fairly pricey.

A clock .. that run each time that you start your engine .. and don't loose the information about the hours running when your shut off and remove the key.

Gustavo, is the speedo showing excessive speeds? If so there is a buildup of oil and grease in the speedo head that has traveled up the cable.
Otherwise, follow John's suggestion.

Im living in Honduras, Central America.

The situation with this speedometer is weird. It first started not registering speed until after the truck would go faster than 20kms, which it originally did started moving as soon as the truck got moving. Then it quit. I realized it was the cable, so I bought a new cable for it. Installed it and nothing. So I let it go for a while like that, then had to change bearings on transfer case and ended up installing a diff transfer case (older model, the one with lowest gearset) but put in the same plastic gear from the old one. (which looked fine) After assembly it didnt work. I ran it for about a week and suddenly it started moving for short periods of time and then quitting. I didnt do anything. On a recent long trip it started working and it has been working ever since, however, it is not stable on a fixed speed, it kind of vibrates... so I was thinking on either replacing the speedo instrument or getting an hourmeter.
