I just bought a new to me 1983 Honda XL600 dual purpose (Enduro) motorcycle and was looking for the appropriate Mud forum, but no forum. Maybe I can post in the expedition forum since this model bike won the Baja 500 a few times back in the days of neon tent pants and almost dirty Madanna and Janet Jones posters when finding a friend's dad's Playboy was the only pornography a teenage boy could find.

If you have to look up Janet Jones to figure out who she is, it's worth it...from the 80s...not so much now.

You need to ride the hell out of that bike above Shaver Lake this summer! Pics would be appreciated. I think there is a motorcycle forum somewhere around here...

I will post pics tomorrow. Got too dark and garage pics sucks. I plan on riding up to the top of Bald Mountain and around Shaver instead of taking my 40. I prefer Beasore Road above Bass Lake. Great brook trout fishing around Chikito Creek and Jackass Lake. Very excited. Haven't had a bike since 97 when I had to sell my Yamah 250 enduro to pay for a u-haul after college graduation.

Sounds like a blast! My son and I use to dirt bike but he ain't around anymore so I sold my Yamaha WR426F. I love 4wheeling but a guy can see so much on a bike in one day.

I have a '92 Honda XL400V Transalp, love the dual sport bikes. When I get back to CONUS I may pick up a new Africa Twin

I don't have a 40 any more and I've been thinking of picking up a used dual sport myself. A few of my friends have bought them over the last couple years and they do trail rides a few times a month in the summer. I used to have an ATV and had a blast with it but of course I had to load it into my truck between trails. Rode a friend's 50cc scooter around one day last summer when my car broke in front of his house and I got the bug to ride again bad... Besides that it's been probably 18 years since I rode on the street. And 20 since since I had the ATV.

Honda's new African Twin looks to be amazing. Talked to a guy at the gas station that was riding a brand new KTM Adventure. Awesome looking machine. He always rode BMW's but said this was the best bike he has owned so far. $$$

I have a few friends who do longer-distance adventure rides. They both have DRZ-400's that they use for local trail rides but one has a KTM Adventure and the other has a GS 800 for longer stuff. This summer was the first long-haul for the KTM and it let him down big time. It made it home, but barely. He had to limp it about 1200 miles. I don't recall what it was exactly but I think it was something in the valvetrain that let go. And NO parts available for it in the fairly remote areas they were in. All the places they checked could have had stuff for the BMW in a hurry no problem. But not the KTM. The BMW was flawless though. The guy had just bought it too. Put like 150 miles on it, outfitted it for the trip and off they went. No issues.

^^If my wife ever lets me get a big adventure bike...it is going to be the BMW Adventure. Until then I have my Yamaha XT-250 to putter around on LOL.

I have and love an FZ6, I'll eventually get a dual sport, probably in the 250cc range for weight savings.

Next bike is going to be an FJR1300, definitely the land cruiser of the touring bike world.

I shipped my KTM to the Philippines last year and rode around the three big islands and had a blast.

The KTM 990 is mine, my brother has the BMW GS800 and the KLR650 was my cousin's.

Adventure bikes are fun!

Slickrock - you from up BC way? DualSport BC
These guys are really active, lots of trips and stuff.

I'm in BC at odd times and CA other times. Promised a pic but it's a crappy garage shot. Been raining since I bought it so just been tinkering.

Still a garage shot but my 40s in the background which makes the picture way better.

The crank case seal is leaking so I'm going to have to tear down the engine. Hopefully that's the bad seal so I don't have to pull the motor. Plan on doing that next week while I'm still on vacation. Just have to order some special tools...more special tools...thought I bought all those when I was rebuilding the 40. Now I have to do it for the XL600r.

Grumpy, I've been on this site for a decade and have learned to trust the opinions of mud members. This is why I asked here and not as some newbie on a motorcycle forum. I thought I wouldn't get flamed here, but as Sir Skillet so eloquently put, there are mean people here too
