i found a tiny pin hole in my oil pan , i just finished changing my oil because my drain bolt was leaking so i changed my oil and installed a copper gasket , that stopped that leak but then when i was under the truck i saw some oil on the bottom of the pan i wiped it away and about a minute later there was a tiny drip again so i am guessing the pan has corroded from the outside and a pin hole has established itself . i am looking for a 3b oil pan but untill then can i just jb weld it or somthing ?

Yep!! When I rebuilt the motor for my daughters FJ55 3B you could see daylight through the first pan I tried. I also fixed the oil leak on my '82 with a new pan (OUCH!!!!).
If you buy a new pan paint it with POR15 or similar on the outside to try to keep corrosion down.

You could kb weld it. But I would lightly clean it up, very lightly. and paint it with POR-15. Two to three good coats.

For cleaning only use a soft brisel brush with marine clean and then metal ready. No sanding.

The POR-15 on my pan seemed to really seal it up. But I was not so thin that it had holes.

Here look at this thread to see the por https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=61755&highlight=oil+pan+man

Do you figure POR 15 is the best product going for underbody painting? I'm hoping to keep my HDJ81 looking clean underneath and asked a q. on this on the 80 forum, but only got one response. Is there a supplier for POR in Canada?

no, you want to see what is happening and with POR or any other perment applications you have no idea till it is too late. a fresh coat of paint and rust preventitive is what i recommend...

others will disagree...

If your frame is rust coated already I say yes.

If it is relatively clean I would just oil the thr crap out of it.

Por isn't a rust prevention tool(well it is but not in my mimd so much)

I like POR-15 it is sold by stevens electric in ontario, shipped thru the mail.

I think if you have solid surface rust than this stuff is great. No rust will grow underneath it. Then heavily oil the inside of your frame. And outside ontop of the por.

I look at por as a rust fix. I painted it on some rusty steel I have hear and it bonded amazingly. I even did panels with it. Only time will tell how it well it works.

My oil pan has the same type of hole, rusted through the outside until it had a pin hole leak, I found it about 2 years ago. I JB welded the hole after cleaning all the oil and grease from the area until I could get a new pan and gasket. Well... 2 years later the JB is still holding up fine and I have an oil pan sitting around taking up space that I haven't gotten around to replace. One of these days.

up date : i found a product by permatex that was basicaly an epoxy putty looked like a little black and gray tootsie roll , i cleaned the oil pan from the outside with brake cleaner and mashed the putty mixture into the hole before it started to weep out again i used the entire amount of putty succesivly mashing each layer together and letting it dry over night , i have driven it around today so far not leaking i stopped by princess auto ( one of my favorite stores ) and got a can of spray on rubberized under coating which i am just going out to spray in a minute after i find a wire brush and sandpaper . :D

what a plesure to park somwhere and not polute the enviroment with half a cup of engine oil .

If you have somewhat intact factory paint (like a southern USA cruiser, or most of the JDMs coming over) on a good frame, I would be inclined to simply use some good wax oils on the inside, and spray-bomb the outside every year, and keep the frame clean. Make sure the frame is cleaned out on the inside before spraying the crap out of it with a wax oil. In a high salt area I would coat the entire outside of the frame (and underside of the body, crevases, wheelwells, etc) with a wax oil too.

If I had a frame off a truck I would be inclined to have it dipped and zinced.

If I was not going to that extreme I would either blast or clean really well, then treat with a light etch/phoshpate, then use something like POR. I used POR on much of the underside metal (fuel tank, shields, etc) on my BJ42 when frame off'd in 1999. It seems to be holding up well, however it has not been winter driven the last few years.

POR is great if you have complete access, have cleaned and prepped the metal per their instructions. If you have not, then POR will pull off in sheets, or worst case is simply stay intact in place over the metal, but not adhered to the metal...which will allow the rust demons to do their dirty deed.

If you can spray, then something like Endura over a two part epoxy primer is worlds above what went on the Cruiser frames years ago.

Prep is everything. It is hard to completely prep and clean on the truck imo.
