Hmmm? Give me your honest opinion on this setup.

That looks pretty interesting. It looks like a cheaper simplier "airbag" setup, that many people use to add carrying capacity. I would think that this would be better than airbags since you wouldn't have to worry about airlines. The only thing you get with airbags is the ability to tailor your ride on the fly, heavy load/more air, no load/less air.

If you aren't worried about flex I say go for it. Can't hurt anything.
If I did do it as a temp fix... im not sure it wouldnt flex much worst then stock springs.

Yeah, as a cheap fix, if you're not worried about flex it might be alright, but i wouldn't be welding to the chassis, that's not legal here in aus and if it has to be done, it must be done by a professional and be engineered or something, if the cops saw something like that over here it'd be deemed unroadworthy for sure. but if done properly without welding to the chassis, that'd be fine i reckon.
Personally i wouldn't, i'd go airbags before that, but i'd also look at upgrading suspension first, so i probably wouldn't even consider it unless the car i was putting it on was a heap of junk.
but also if it requires no fab work, like just slip it in for a trip, then yeah that'd be cool, i'd do that.

It just looks like a bandaid fix to me. More work than it is worth. I would just get some heavyer duty springs with the propper arch that you want for lift. It also seems kind of booty fablous. If I saw that going down the road I would most likly think to my self....."self, what that fxxx is that red neck doing? why does he have both coils and leafs? what an ass."

But that is just my .02

Booty fablous. LMAO.

I'm with ridgerunner; new springs- or airbags. Sure, it probably doesn't hurt anything, and it seems an ingenious fix. If it was so stellar an idea why is he the only one doing it? Triple check your welds if you go this way; a spring popping out could be an ugly scene (unless you are right behind it with a camera; kodak moment).

he's not the only one doing it, but he may be the only one doing it for all his buddies.
i did this for my piggy when i load down for camping, the arse end gets pretty darn heavy with the back AND trailer full. so i got me some coils at the j/y did some measuring and pretty much ended up with the same as this guy. i really only use them when loaded up, it not only helps carry the load but keeps me from bottoming all the time to get to the camp spot, when i unload i take them out before wheelin.
i am currently getting airbags system put together for the pig, collecting parts doing it on a budget, should end up a better setup and i wont have to remove them for wheelin.,

I am pretty sure my 1985 4runner was way liter in the rear then any Land Cruiser wagon I have owned. Even with my fiberglass top on. The rearend would break traction if you went around a corner to fast even with 33's. Thing is anyone (and Im sure everyone one here on mud) who has ever owned a first generation 4runner, or been around them long enough... knows those rear springs suck arse and sag... I ended up doing a suspension lift on my 4runner to correct the arsedrag. I did read what some of the guys said.... and emailed... they all seem pretty happy with the patch.... two years on one truck and its still working .... Anyway... thought it was neat... i know its come up in chat a few times over the years on cruiser lists.... but it always seemed kinda crazy... until I saw this guy doing it and it seemed to work for him.
Anyway thats why I wanted to see what everyone had to say.
keep it coming.... I am trying to get some coils for free... I just want to see what it does... I just hope curiosity doesnt kill the pig.

Funny, Dave. I did the same thing with those sagged out MAF springs I had. :)

The fix? New springs.

Brian.... thanks again for your old sagged out MAF springs. :grinpimp: lol

Did you see the pig after I installed them? Pulling that add-a-leaf and mixxing the leafs before installing them worked out... really leveled out the pig in the back. thanks again.... I gave my factory rears to FJBen..... he was going SOA until he rolled it... I was going to buy his suspension and give him the MAF's and my front spring packs for free.

I did Dave, looks great! :D

I know you want to mod out your 55 a bit, but there's something beautiful about a stocker.... :)

To tell ya the truth Brian.... I am more then likely going to keep it stock.... just rebuild the axles... maybe go with an Aussie Locker in the rear... and some basic mods... Thats another reason why I thought this setup might be an option....

Now wife and I are seriously looking into doing that FJ55-130 truck. That one will be the truck we do stuff to. :D

I REALLY want to see the FJ55-130. I'm really thinking about the same swap (although I'm atleast four years out from pig butchery). :)

Sorry guys what is an FJ55-130? I know about FJ55-100's truck but we haven't even seen the 130 series LC and you are already thinking about cutting one up??

Is there something I am missing?

Ryan.

the FJ55-130 is designed after the Rover D-130 doublecab. There is a thread talking about its design and I slowly tweaked in the overall look before actual fabing it up... I intend on finding a decent donor pig and using it as the basis for the project. I wont cut up a perfect or pig that doesnt need to be cut.
