What is this?

I'm trying to get a grasp on my electrical system. I have both engine and chassis and body manual but I'm still a little lost on the electric distribution in my truck.

This green box has six terminals on it. A1, A2, B1, and B2 are for the relay part. X1 and X2 are for the transformer part. My stereo and trailer lights were hooked up to the A1 and A2 relay terminals. There is a 24v Hella relay attached to the X1 and X2 terminals (transformer terminals). From the relay one wire goes to the 12v white lead off the solar converter. THe other wire goes to the Positive end of my 12v battery.
Am I wrong in assuming that that green box changes 24v down to 12? It seems like that green relay/transformer box is not essential in my setup.
I have seen an great writeup on Stone's solar converter setup and I think I'm going to mimic.
I've been having issues with my batter draining and I would like to clean up some of the wiring in the truck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

It's a 24V relay that switches from B1-B2 to A1-A2 when activated.
In other words B1-B2 is N.C. (normally closed) and A1-A2 is N.O. (normally open) when there is no power on X1-X2.
That spiral you see is called a coil which pulls the contacts down when activated.
It's not a transformer, just a double relay (switch).
From your text I think it's part of the solar panel circuit to switch on or off things to prevent unwanted draw or to connect your radio to solar power when the engine is off.
Just my 2 cents.

Hope this helps a bit.

iirc that's a military relay that a fellow from Calgary came across. I've got one buried around here. Daryl must have ended up with one too.

yea it is an old military relay, when I googled the part number it would take me to aircraft parts catalogues. fun stuff.
I thought that spiral was supposed to be a transformer.

so is this thing crucial for a 24-12v setup. Or can I do without and just my run my 12v accessories off a fuse block?

Is your HJ61 a 24 volt system? In which case it would be best to get a 24-12 volt converter for your 12 volt accessories which would be fused from the 12 volt side. This device you have is simply an electronic switch more commonly known as a relay. Transformers for voltage conversion only work with alternating current.

I am presuming that you have this wired between your high battery (24V) and your voltage reducer. That is what it is meant for. At 50 amps, its a nice relay to have. Just make sure that if you got a voltage reducer that can handle this kind of amperage (probably more than your alternator puts out) that you also use the appropriate gauge of wire.

Depends.

Do you want some key powered 12V leads, as well as constant 12V leads? For me, I prefer to have stereo mem and a vehicle alarm, as well as as accessory plug or two with constant power. Anything else is keyed on the ACC position.

Becuase your trailer lights are tied in here, I would suggest is seeing if the PO has a wiring diagram of what he did, then compare that to what you want to accomplish. You might already be there, and the power drain is another issue. But without full knowledge of how this is wired...no way to know.

In the first post, he says he's got a solar convertor. This will manage the 24/12 issue as long as it is set up correctly.

As we've answered the main query, re what the photo is of, you've now got a different question. So how about posting a photo of the solar convertor so you can be reassured about that setup.

Once you understand what you have already, you can then learn more about 24/12 issues.

It is a 24v HJ61 and there is a Solar Converter in place, I'm just curious as to relevance of this huge honkin relay in my 12v system.

Yes! This is where I'm confused. It was spliced into the 12v line off my Solar Converter. The line runs through a 24v Hella relay before it gets to the large green box relay. It is also hooked up to the positive side of my high battery.

Yes. And from what I understand, this is the result of Stone's Final Setup? Although I'd like the idea of wiring the fuse block into the ignition rather than a seperate switch.

I will post a diagram of how it's wired this afternoon.

Thanks in advance.
