hi fellas just picked up my 2nd 60 series cruiser a few months ago 88 HJ61 VX 24volt import pretty impressed the 12HT is soooo much better than the dirty old 3F carby in my other FJ62  anyways been slowly doing work to it to get it ready for Roadworthy cert, the times come to sort the charging system electrics arent my strong point i've had a bit of a look through some previous posts but cant quite find the info im lookin for. heres the issue my battery/filter/turbo lights ect flicker on and off from idle to about 1700 or so RPM then go away, my voltage guage in the dash doesnt show any volts at all ever, where does the guage get it reading from? the voltage regulator on the alternator? im not the best with auto electrics especially 24v use to the normal 12v stuff, my first step will likely be to try replace the brushes, any help appreciated

Don't fret about 24v. Enjoy the quick starter turnover. Only worry about 24v if you stick your tongue on a connection to test it, it tingled much more than 12v! Or if you want to take 12v off, but thats a whole different topic covered well elsewhere.

If you do not have a multimeter, go buy one. Measure the voltage at the battery/s and the alternator outlet post. You shouldn't lose much more than a volt between the two.

Changing brushes is easy.
Disconnect batteries
Remove air cond compressor, no need to lose the gas, just slide it out of the way.
Take top cover off alternator, noting all the various size nuts and placement of things.
Brush holder pulls out.
Check the manual for correct sizing, I think they need to be 25mm or more long.

If the gauge is not showing ANY volts, then check fuses. If it is sitting in the middle, then it is showing battery voltage, which will soon go down if no charge is going into them. Also check the regulator behind the speedo cluster. I've seen instructions on how to clean up the points that pit over time.

Yours not confident where to start with this stuff, get an auto sparkie to check out the fundamentals and learn from there.

thanks for the tips tim, i had a bit of a poke around thisarvo after work, ended up just pulling off the alternator so i could have a good look at it as it was really easy to remove, cleaned it up and checked the brushes (14mm left) 5mm is minimum and 20mm is new length so plenty left on the brushes and making good contact, cleaned it up i suspect its been off some time before also possibly rebuilt? few bits of writing on it paint marker ect, and alot of the nuts / blots on it looked newer so who knows. im sus on the external regulator which is on the left inner guard most ive seen are built into the alt, so ill grab a multi meter on the weekend and put the alt back in and check it all, i had a look at all the fuses i could find and all looks good.

The external regulator are generally reliable. They are not that easy to set accurately, if you're anal/pedantic about things, but they are reliable.

The manual gives the testing specs for them. You may benefit from cleaning up the points in the regulator.

well i took the alternator to a auto electrician the other day to get it tested while it was pulled out, he said it tested like new so my theory of it possibly being rebuilt might be true :hmm:, anyway i picked it up thisarv along with a multi meter and some contact cleaner so ill see if i can have a bit of a poke around with the multi meter, i found this info here on HJ61 charging systems: http://www.toyota4wd.dk/Teknik/2H-12HT/8-CH.pdf so ill try check the regulator, i have taken the cap off it and visually checked it"looks" fine.

i dont yet have a workshop manual ive been using my one for my FJ62 instead while ive been doing all the other mechanical work as most of its the same as the HJ, i might grab one soon any links for checking / adjusting these regulators would be much appreciated ;)

If you happen to need a new regulator, the RGX 2028 from Ashdowns is a direct plug in replacement. You might get an electronic version or you might get a old fashioned coil unit, same part number...... ??

Have a look at 60 Series Workshop Manuals for the manual.

I have attached the section relating to testing the regulator.

Hello

I have a problem on my HJ61 with external regulator 24v

the problem is not with the regulator itself but with the little electric module just plugged before to the regulator
( this is the white piece between the 2 connectors )

what is this part ?
Do you know the toyota reference ?

Is there some sellers of this part in the US ( I am from FRANCE )

Thanks

When your lights stop flickering does the voltage on gauge pick back up or not, is their charge going through your batteries , there some relays that need to be checked as well,
Not sure where your located I do have a 24v ext reg, alternator, from my donor, I could not use as my rig is int regulated,

I aam located far away ..........in France

My regulator is ok , the part in bad confditions is that small electric connector strapped with tape
I want to fin a new one or a functionning one

Hi, what relays need to be checked related to charging issues on the 24 volt hj61?

Hola, ¿qué relés deben verificarse en relación con los problemas de carga en el hj61 de 24 voltios?
Hola pudiste verificar los reles ( Donde van ubicados) o repasar las conexiones de alimentación de 24 V ?
