The water seperater which is mounted on the chassis rail near the rear wheel, has started to seep diesel due to internal corrosion (I know I should have drained it more often). The local Toyota dealer steered me towards an after market type as the genuine ones are around $500.

The issue is that these after market water serperaters/fuel filters have a glass bowl on the bottom. This will mean mounting it in the engine bay. Has anybody fitted one of these? and if so where abouts have you mounted it?, any issues or dramas?

Thanks

Vanders.

yah you will not want it under the truck. When you yank the old one I guess just a piece of rubber hose would suffice in between.

For which one to get? I have the large one.... really nowhere in a 60 to put it. Buy the shortest racor 30 micron you can find. With the glass water separator on the bottom.

Then when you check the oil you can just peek in. They make ones with switches to turn on the filter light. But why bother IMOP.

My feelings with the Micron size, 30 is good because the stock one is 10(at the engine) I think. So why not have it gather from 30 to 10 and the Racor gets above 30. SO it gets the larger stuff. Also why put in a 10 for the Racor.. it might just cause enough restriction that it can't be helpful. Making a lower pressure at the IP.
The IP is designed for 10 microns so I do not feel the need to go lower. IMOP anyhow

And keep it mounted AWAY from the exhaust. I've had a heck of a time with mine. I couldn't figure out why it always leaked air. Eventually I determined that the heat from the exhaust was expanding the rubber oring/washers and causing air to get in. This is especially important if you get the plastic bowl I acutally melted mine.

Thanks for the replies, I have another question though.

The old water seperater is mounted below the fuel tank, so when it is drained no air can enter the system, the after market one will be mounted higher in the engine bay, does this increase the possibility of sucking in air?

I guess what I am really asking is will I have to bleed the system each time I drain the trap?

I don't think so unless you drain the bowl. Just a simple drain should not pull air in. But try to keep it low if possible.

Also there is a hand primer on the racor, so you could pump it up to add some pressure and crack the drain a bit to relieve the water. Remember you only open it if you see water and you close it right away once you take a teaspoon or so of water out.

After a certain year all fuel filters and separators were mounted on the inside fender which is higher than the fuel pump.
I have an aftermarket CAV 296 mounted in the factory inside fender position (73 series)and it works fine.
Get one with a built in primer.

You could probably mount a HJ75 series filter and separator. They are a bit easier to find at the wreckers these days but the filter is $20 vs $7 for the CAV type fllter.

It was the CAV type that I was looking at so I think I will go down that road.

Thanks for input guys.
