Hj60 engine knock (1 Viewer)

So I bought a 2H 1987 hj60, just under 740,000kms. I knew it had a knock and plan to replace engine. I suspect bottom end bearing. Bought the bearing kit to replace the old ones. but I'm not sure if the engine needs to be taken out in order to do so, or if it can be left in? My plan was to drop the sump and try get to it, but could use some advise.

The crank bearing caps can be removed while the engine is still installed. Then the bearings come right out when the cap is off.

Here’s the underside of a gasoline 2F. Your diesel will be similar.
