How easy would it be to convert a HJ60 auto to a manual transmission? Would it be a simple bolt up, or would you have to change the driveshaft lengths?

Lets make a scenario. Say I have an H42 and split case all mated up and ready to go from a wrecked '87 FJ. Would it be a bolt up to put the transmission into the HJ? Would the crossmembers be different? How about the pedal assembly? Would it be difficult to swap in the different pedals?

I'm asking because I'm thinking about buying an HJ, so I want to know if it's worth it to buy a good HJ auto and swap in a manual.

Thanks guys.

Im not sure about the small details but everything should bolt up.

For all that work you should put a 5 speed in;)
The 5 speeds work well with a 2H.

Is the bolt pattern the same between the 2F and the 2H? Asking because a nv4500 might be in the works as well.

Long time 'Cruiser admirer

I have a very dear and close friend who got me interested in 'cruisers. I think it is superior driving skills but, I must admit, he makes a good case for the superior engineering of the rig. I don't own one, myself. I am looking and starting to save. I am leaning towards the early wagons with diesels. Your input, both positive and negative, is welcome.

buy what you want in the end. if you want a standard then look for that.

in my mind it is a waste of time, money and energy to stick a 4 speed into a HJ60 but then what do i know?

Looking for an engine for HZJ 75

I am looking for a cummins 6bt that has low milage on it ...and in great running condition , for my hzj75 toyota.
Thanks for responding

I'm not saying necessarily a 4 speed, but any standard transmission. I just said 4 speed because that would be a very cheap setup.

Any real technical knowledge out there except from rosco?

Its a great vehicle with a great engine ,want do you want to spoil it with a lump like that.

Most cruisers get the 4 cyl 4bt but thats only because most americans dont have access to a toyota diesel.

Do you mean bell housing ? Yes but the diesel has a heavier bell housing.

The driveshafts off the 87 FJ60 should be ok.

The auto is the same length as the 5 speed and I think late model 4 speed.

I havent done this swap but generally all the bolt holes are there for brackets
They pretty well much make one body for everything.

Probably need to start your own thread with some specific questions

If the drivetrains are the same length, then could you just use the driveshafts in the HJ?

Of course, the t/cases all sit in the same place as the gassers so the drive shafts are all the same.
I dont know about the earlier 4 speeds.

Hold on guys. I have a late model 2F and 12H-T (2H block) sitting in my garage. The 2F has a massive cast steel bellhousing and the 12H-T has a dainty aluminum bellhousing. I believe that their bolt patterns are different.

Be careful here. Some parts are interchangeable. Some are deffinitely not.

My two cents...

The bellhousings are different, but are the blocks the same? Does the 2H come with the aluminum bellhousing or the iron one?

The later engines had an aluminum bellhousing I think. The 3B that I bought for my '67 FJ45LV had an aluminum bellhousing on it. I found and used the cast iron one though.

My 88 2H has an aluminium housing. The quote"dainty housing" is this from an auto perhaps? these pics are of a 2H and 1HZ that I took for comparison.

I'm assuming that the 2H bellhousing is on the left?

So in terms of the clutch system, I know that it's a hydraulic clutch, and that system entails plumbing the two cylinders together, right? I'm not quite sure how that system works.

2H has the iron one for the presumed heavvier duty use of a diesel;)

As far as I know the slave cyl are on the same side (RH)and a straight bolt up.

yes the one on the left, on top and on the tray. I did not elaborate on it as I thought if you had one you would recognise it. As I asked is the other Aluminium one a converter housing from an automatis as most 12Hts were autos.
This is the hydraulic clutch set up on a right hand drive HJ75 ute.cheers
