Ahh did I mention we drove across most of the U.S with our hazzards flashing.......theres a fusible link for the headlights but not the taillights? All the fuses are good, turn signals, brakelights and everything else checks out. Is there a taillight relay? Seems like my only option, has anyone else experienced this? Just don't have any way of testing it without replacing it...

I just did a complete harness swap and I dont remember seeing a relay...besides the ones under dash..you may have a brake in the wire somewhere.......Sorry not much help

There is a relay under the drivers side dash. Look up in the front corner under the dash and you will see a rack with 6 small relays and 1 large one. The tail light relay is one of the round ones. But...the problem is more than likely a broken wire in the harness at the left rear quarter panel. Pop off the interior panels, get a trouble light and start looking for a broken wire.

first thing: use a trouble light/multimeter to see if you are getting voltage at the light sockets.

I recently "rebuilt" my sockets because the little spring mechanism there had enough corrosion that the sockets had a faulty ground.

Harder to describe than to see.... just unscrew the lens screws, pull the lens off, then pull the whole light assembly out. Pop the little rubber boot off of the back of the taillight. Now look at it and see if it is a good connection.

Easier to test w/ meter/light first.

I scrubbed mine with some fine sandpaper, bent the spring out a little, then put a blob of silicone grease there to keep it from rusting again... works much better now. In fact, I did all the light sockets while I was there... why not?

I had the same problem and chased the entire harness in my HJ60. A few things. There is no fusible link- despite what the FSM suggests in its troubleshooting guide.
When you turn on the running lights, you should hear a click in the relay. It's under the dash near the fusebox - if there's no click, you've got a problem with the relay. (as another test - if your front running lights work, then the relay is probably fine since it controls both front and back.)
My problem turned out to be corrosion in the quick connect in the rear left panel panel (Canadian 24Volt HJ60-if you have RH drive it may be somewhere else) The tiny socket inside had disintegrated and the wire pulled right out the back - I ended up bojanging some wierd and wrong socket bits from Lordco to repair it. And replacing the 12 v bulbs the previous owner had put in - when he sold me the truck he mumbled something about the taillights always burning out.

Before installing the new engine the headlights and taillights worked. Moving the fusible link for the headlights broke it. Got that fixed, still no taillights. Have the front running lights.
