We (Battle Born Cruisers of N Nevada) set the dates and meet locations and times last night for the High Rock Canyon trip.

The trip will be an overnighter on April 29 & 30.
The plan this year is to drive in from the Soldier Meadows side to the hot springs, set up camp, then explore the canyon.

The roads to the camp location are suitable for almost any vehicle. The trail through the canyon can be negotiated by any stock 4X4 truck and most SUV's. Last year we had a mostly stock FJ60, a fully stock 4Runner, and a full size GMC long bed extended cab PU. We all made the whole trail with no trouble.

What to expect:
Be prepared. This a remote area, while the trail is fairly mild there are no services any where nearby. Make sure your rig is in good repair and that you have a good spare. Bring the usual extra fluids, tools and recovery equipment for your vehicle.

Expect some Nevada pin stripping as sections of the trail are pretty brushy.

Be prepared for a few water crossings. These are shallow with rocky/gravel bottoms. Some sections of the trail will be very muddy.

Bring your photography equipment. This is one of the most scenic areas of Nevada.

Bring your Audubon's field guides and field glasses. Last year we spotted everything from Big Horn Sheep to Antelope. There are also many wild flowers, and birds.

Bring a swim suit, the hot springs are great!

There are two meet locations and times.
Some of us will be meeting at the Albertsons in Spanish Springs and caravaning through the Smoke Creek Desert to the second meet location. Our leave time will be 7:00 am sharp. If you need to get last minute supplies or gas please show up early enough to be ready no later than 7:00.

The second meet location will be at Brunos in Gerlach. Meet time is 9:00 am with a leave time of 9:30 am.

Driving directions to meet locations:
Brunos from Reno; East on I80 31 miles to the Wadsworth exit. North on SR447 72 miles to Gerlach. Brunos is on the right side of the main street, Gerlach is a small town you won't have any trouble finding Brunos. If you do just ask anybody for directions.

The Albertsons in Spanish Springs from Reno; North on Pyramid Highway (SR445) 8.5 miles to 9750 Pyramid Lake Hwy. The store is on the left just past Partei Vally Road.

Notes:
Brunos has the best food for 50 miles in any direction, mostly because it is the only restaurant for 50 miles in any direction.

Fuel is available in Gerlach, however if you are coming in on SR447 from Reno Empire offers lower prices. Empire is located about three miles south of Gerlach.

According to a report from alia176 both SR447 and Smoke Creek Desert roads are in very good shape.

High Rock Canyon Closed

I called the Winnemuca BLM field office today. Much more helpfull people than the regional office in CA. According to Dave the canyon will be open the second weekend in May. The reason it is closed is because this is the lambing season for Big Horn Sheep as well as the nesting season for eagles and other raptors. Dave is sending me some maps. I think it is the same map I paid $4 for a couple of weeks ago in Empire.

We will figure out what the plan is at the next club meeting.

BTW, Bruno's has the best ravioli in the west.. Fodd there is actually fairly good!!!

And he is a pretty good guy. Crusty old man :)

Let me be more politically correct! Bruno is getting older and way more cranky. His ravioli is still pretty good but some of his other stuff is just as greasy as before. I did witness him treating one of his employee like absolute crap in front of the patrons. Perhaps I was exposed to him a little too much while I lived in Empire back in '93. On a recent visit to Bruno, about three weeks ago, he seemed to have gotten worse. Guess that's normal for an old Sicilian!

Last time I was a brunos, he treated us pretty good, bought us a round of drinks on him, but maybe he was in a good mood. The raviolis are the best I have ever had, I drive over there just for dinner.

SO is the trip on for sometime in May?

Should be a nice weekend. I couldn't make it on your original weekend. So some friends and I were going the same weekend that you guys are going now. Our route to the canyon will be a little different. We are gassing up in Gerlach on Saturday and instead of driving up the "high road" to Soldier Meadows, we are going to cut across the Playa toward Black Rock Point/Double Hot Springs. From there we are going to head up the east side of the valley to Mud Lake/Soldier Meadows. Then depending how we are doing, will depend on where we camp. Either High Rock Lake or if we don't make it that far, we will camp somewhere south of Soldier Meadows. I know of a few nice spots. Then we will head into the canyon on Sunday and probably camp somewhere around Steven's Camp. We aren't heading back until Monday.

Not trying to hi-jack your thread, that's why I didn't post anything prior to now. Hopefully we will see you guys up there. I don't have a CB in my rig yet, so we will be using Motorola type radios and will be on Channel 4.

Later,
Jack

be careful on the blackrock at this time of year. It is very easy to get stuck out there and Very hard to extract yourself..

Personaly, I would take the high road..

I know what you mean, this isn't my first time. I know when to charge across the playa and when to stick to the high road. I've been going up there since 1994.

Since most everybody will be in something other than their trail rig we most likely will use the FRS radios, I'll suggest we use ch4.

Our plan is to make camp at soldier meadows hot springs then head into the canyon.

As far as I know right now we have a couple of 4runners, two or more 60's, one 100, maybe my 40.

We re-scheduled the trip for May 20th and 21st.

I will be back by then, hopefully the Land Cruiser will be back on the mainland by then too. I would like to come along, but like most of my plans it will probably be a last minute deal.

Won't Sam have your truck ready by then? :D

Great, hopefully we will run into you guys up there. Ours will be an eclectic group also. LC's, 4runner, ford truck, possibly a jeep unlimited and whom ever else wants to go.

That would be cool if you can go also Harry.

Looking forward to it, should be a great weekend.

Jack
