Since my 1991 has rear drum brakes, and I've got the Axxis Ultimate 100-series pads and 1994 Calipers/rotors in the front, I'd like to upgrade my rear brakes, but I don't want to switch to calipers.

So, I ask the forum, has anyone found any carbon, ceramic, kevlar, etc. brake shoes that will fit these trucks? anything that will enhance the rear brakes effectiveness?

thanks

Do you have 15" rims? How is the fit with the newer caliper/rotor? Alot of us FJ guys have thought about doing this, but not many have bit the bullet.

About the rear, I think Man-A-Fre has something better that stock, not too sure though.

This truck has the 16" rims, I think they're necessary to clear the newer calipers

I'll check out MAF, thanks for the lead

I did fine some Carbon matrix linings, but they're almost $100/set. wow, that's a ton of bux for just brake shoes!

nice to see direct confirmation the rotor/caliper combo works.

post 92 front calipers love to gouge the OEM 91-92 15" rims. How do I know you ask? Bailey (CruisinGA) needed my 91's spare to get his '93 off the mountain 2 weeks ago. It created a ring on the inside of the rim, but I told him to go ahead and use it because it is my spare and it was late, snowing and cold.

Eric, was that on the front or back?

front

but I had always known the rear to be the problem end. I guess when it comes to OEM rims, both ends are a problem.

It was on the front "front calipers love.."

Hmm, and it seemed like we were just getting somewhere for us 91/92 guys on brakes.

Why not do what the 60 series do? run MC rear discs and calipers. You can get them Loaded for 30 bucks a pop and new dics at the tune of 25 and I think the brakets for mounting all this crap is 12 bucks a side.....I think it comes down to being cheaper than getting new pads and rotors for the LC anyway.

91-92 cruiser have basically the same setup brake wise as the 60-62-series...

food for thought.

I know when the shoes on my 80 go south i am going for this approach.

Al, what are the "MC" discs/calipers?

Where can you buy caliper mounting brackets? Calipers, etc? (recommendations sought)

Also, does the master cylinder need to be changed out?

I guess you'd need to replace the hard line on the rear axle as well.

thanks for the idea, that would probably be much better.

Monte Carlo....search prob, in the 60's section for it for more info....I know its an early model MC brakes that you are looking for.. I'll dig up what I found later today...
